Advantages: Great at parties, big mix of songs available
Disadvantages: Can become quite expensive downloading new songs
I never used to be a fan of karaoke until a few years ago when I went to a karaoke bar with a few friends and they twisted my arm, now there is no stopping me!
So when I saw they had released this fantastic title for the PS3 I had to get it. This is the original release, since then there have been many other versions released. The original game comes with a good mix of 30 songs to sing and 2 microphones. However, the best part of having this game for the PS3 rather than the PS2 is you can download extra songs for 99p each just like you would on something like itunes. This is a brilliant way to build up your collection of karaoke songs as you can choose what type of songs you want so whether you're into r'n'b, rock, dance, country, rap or pop, it's all there online waiting for you! The online songs are also updated every few weeks so there are always new ones to choose from. Plus you can also choose packs of songs which are a little cheaper than buying them all separtely. For instance, you can buy a pack of 5 Take That songs, or Roxette, or Queen or Christmas hits and loads more for £4.49 a pack. This is obviously only worth it though if you're a big fan of all 5 songs in the pack!
If you like to play online you can also upload videos of yourself singing (if you have an eyetoy) so other people can see you perform and rate you! There are also sometimes prizes to be won for the best ones. It's quite a laugh just watching some of the videos, some of which are very strange!
There are lots of different versions of Singstar out now for the PS3, I would only suggest buying one disc and then downloading the extras when you want them because then you'll have all of your songs in one place. If you have to keep swapping discs over, the songs do not stay stored like the downloaded ones.
This game works best at parties with groups of friends, although myself and my wife do often just play with the 2 of us!
The only downsides are you have to be careful with the microphones, I have had to replace one of mine since buying this game but I did find a cheap one on ebay so it wasn't too expensive.
Plus you can also become quite addicted to getting new songs and the money soon mounts up!
Summary: Best party game for the PS3
