Advantages: Stealthy, Different
Disadvantages: Can be Frustrating, Steep Learning Curve
Confrontation is the fifth installment in the SOCOM series and like Warhawk is an online only game. Because of this it is cheaper than your average retail game but it does leave you anticipant of a very good online mode. You can buy Confrontation in the Playstation Network store or buy a tangible copy with a headset if you wish. For me, Confrontation is very hit and miss and you have to be in the right mood to play it.
The player can customise weaponry, armour and their costume to quite a detailed extent in SOCOM which is good as individuality is important in an online only game in my opinion. There is a decent variety of maps for the price of the game and they are very big. There is also a strong emphasis on teamwork in this game and it is needed to perform well, however this is down to the players playing the game and their attitudes. The gameplay is a fairly slow and it is a difficult learning curve but you soon begin to see the ins and outs of the game and what is required to do well. The gameplay is very much stealth focused particularly as the vast majority of game modes are no respawn modes. I am very much of a fan of no respawn modes but I do think Confrontation over does this mode a tad.
If you sprint out from the start on this game like most would on Call of Duty you will be punished. If you are a fan of patience in these games and perhaps playing a shooter like it would be in real life, with no-one risking their life by running about like mad, Confrontation might just be for you. However it can be frustrating when you die early on and that's that for five minutes. But again, this is down to how you play the game and you soon develop a method of staying alive and racking up kills. If you are on a team that communicates and stick together it can be a lot easier but unless you are apart of a gaming clan, that can be hard to find.
The game has been widely recieved as a flop and a dissapointment by fans of the series and critics. I never had the game near the launch but it was lambasted for having poor servers and many bugs, but most of which seemed to be fixed now I have the game.
Personally I do not feel this game is a flop. I would consider the game to be one for the purists or people who want their shooters to be a bit different. It is more in the Rainbow Six Vegas 1 mould than a Call of Duty mould.
Summary: An underrated game in my opinion. It is one you'll either love or hate if you are a shooter fan.
