Sonic burst back onto our screens for the Xbox 360 and PS3 with this 3D adventure involving everyone's favourite blue hedgehog. I was excited to get this as I had played Sonic Adventure and was hopeful for more of the same...but alas this game was quite a let down. The game play was a bit samey and a little bit too high octane! I kept repeatedly getting stuck on one level where Sonic is hurtling towards the end of the level at terrific speed and you can't actually control him to stop him...just to make him move out of the way of things. I think I will always be a Sonic purist....the best games there have been have been in 2D format.
There was quite alot of wandering round and talking to people in this game...and I spent alot of time accidentally jumping in wrong directions and killing myself! I hope that this game will encourage new players to the Sonic the Hedgehog saga to want to play the other games...but I think this is certainly one of the poorer games that SEGA have produced starring the cool blue Sonic. The only up side at the moment is that this game has been out for a while so it should be relatively cheap to purchase....but I would suggest it only if you are rather bored and REALLY want to play a game with Sonic in that you may not have played before.
I recently purchased Sonic the Hedgehog for the Playstation 3 the other week for about £15 having played this classic game on other consoles over the years. I have to say honestly that I'm glad I didn't pay that much more for it as I was a bit disappointed with it and didn't feel the game had been advanced at all.
In this game you play as Sonic once more and he is again tasked with saving the world. Princess Elise is kidnapped by Dr. Eggman and you have to stop him before he discovers the secret of the Chaos Emeralds and destroys the world.
The game actually starts with some spectacular animated clips and cutscenes which are actually quite good and lured me into thinking this would be pretty good. You begin in a town where you can talk to other characters you meet on your travels. You are required to complete certain phases and steps before moving on and progressing.
This particular version of the game features two modes for you to play in: Single player and Multi-player.
In the single player mode it features three main characters: Sonic, Shadow who is his main rival and Silver. Each of these characters has their own abilities and skills you can use to your advantage. You do have to go through some mini-games that take a while to unlock some of these abilities though.
The multiplayer mode includes a two-player tag and battle mode. You can also unlock character episode extras. Nothing is particuarly interesting or stimulating in this mode though unfortunately.
As far as the gameplay goes the missions are not great and I found that I had to play certain levels over and over again as there is no real direction or purpose. Some of the levels seem overly hard and others too easy so there is nothing really in between for me anyway.
On a plus note the graphics are very good which is a bonus. The backgrounds and details on each level are above average but unfortunately graphics are not everything when the gameplay is not up to scratch.
Overall, I was quite disappointed with this version and I wouldn't recommend this as I have definately played much better action adventure games.
I cant think of much to say about thsi game that is good except for that the graphics make it look stunning. Fisrt thing you will probs notice that there is a loading screen for everything, It will load, they will give you the objectives to a mission and it will load again. I wouldnt find this so bad if the loading was actually faster. Another thing I picked up whilst playing this game is that sometimes you go to fast for the game and as a result you fall through the graphics die and have to start the level again. This is personal opionion of mine, but I dislike all of the extra characters that are being added to the series. Why cant it just be like the old times when it was just sonic. This would be an extremly good game if the errors were corrected, but my brother still seems to like it so I think if you were thinking of buying this game it might be better to just buy it for you lil brother as they can put up with the loading every second and dying.
Wow, what a mess. After a hugely disappointing Sonic Heroes and a laughably bad Shadow the Hedgehog, Sonic Team managed to make it three flops in a row.
Ashamedly named after the classic original Sonic title from 1991, Sonic the Hedgehog introduces more useless characters to the series, the main one being another hedgehog called Silver who has telekinetic abilities, hmm...
The game engine along with its controls are quite possibly the worst ever seen in a video game of the stature of the Sonic franchise. The controls are horrendous, while slowdown is a regular annoyance. Glitches are almost as common as rings, meaning level progression is horribly halted through no fault of your own. Frequent loading times lasting around 20 seconds also help to get your blood boiling, especially when back-to-back when completing pointless town missions in a hub world serving as much purpose as notes pages in game instruction manuals.
The great shame in this game though is that there is a half-decent title in there somewhere. The level design, length, range and difficulty - had they been in well-made game could have put this right up there with the best Sonic games.
Only the very patient, very forgiving Sonic devotees should go anywhere near this unfortunately.
And this is coming from a huge Sonic fan.
Sonic has been on a downward spiral for some time now with new needless gimmicks and characters seemingly added in every new carnation of the franchise and this game is no different.
To begin with the loading times in the game are ridiculous. It can take between 8-15 seconds easy just to load up a cut scene which could simply last 10 seconds itself and then reload back up the original location. It totally destroys the fluency and believability of the game.
There is no real point in the hub world as it serves no overall purpose to the game and the mix of having to use the speed of Sonic, the telekenesis of Silver (thats right, telekenesis !) and the destructive abilities of Shadow do not mix well into a game at all.
As per usual with 3-D Sonic games the camera also has its many problems which can lead to frustrating and pety deaths. For a game which is meant to be about 'speed' this game doesnt provide much of it with a seemingly much slower sonic, actually representing a real hedgehogs speed for once, and with a lack of speed comes a lack of framerate which makes no sense what so ever.
Sonic the Hedgehog video game is something you could show any up and coming game designer for an idea of what not to do in a video game since it's been clearly rushed and is a complete an utter mess. The AI is dumb and terrible and it really seems Sega needs to either let this franchise die, sadly, or pick up their game drastically it they want success.
Sonic the Hedgehog on the PS3 and Xbox 360 is a perfect example of the videogame industry's weaknesses. It is without a doubt the most poorly coded, sloppily designed game I have ever played. That this game was approved for release by the publishers is remarkable, even more astonishing is that the consumer would be expected to pay £40 for this mess. That this game can not be returned as a defective product also shows a failure of this country's trading standards body to really understand software development.
This game is not merely bad, it is broken. The code is so inefficient that the game requires all too regular periods for loading. On many occasions you will be given expected to talk to a character and receive a mission, in these situations you can expect a loading screen before a standard greeting, a loading screen before your briefing, a loading screen before a standard goodbye and another loading screen before the mission itself. Astonishingly, the game doesn't seem to be doing much in this loading screens. The graphics are ugly, there is no use of physics or anything else that would require time to think. I have no idea what the loading screens are doing but they are more frequent and far longer than real demanding games such as Killzone 2 or Metal Gear Solid 4. In fact, I can't think of a single game with more loading screens. I probably spent more time loading than playing.
Once actually into the game, things don't improve much. The effort gone into making the game play properly seems to have been minimal. Sonic controls like his shoes are made of butter, making him turn or dodge as he runs is impossible. Considering much of the game involves leaping onto precarious platforms, this makes trying to play the game ridiculous. Carried over from earlier entries in the series are the sections of springboards and speed pads intended to push Sonic into speedy runs and grinds. During these moments, using the controller to direct Sonic yourself will often result in missing a spring and falling to your death. Why anyone should be expected to enjoy a game that's more successful when you let it play itself, I have no idea.
The game also includes two other playable characters. Silver and Shadow. These characters each play differently. Silver's psychic powers create a form of telekinetic puzzle platformer, Shadow's levels involve some rather out of place vehicle and weapon sections. Silver and Shadow's campaigns benefit from being at a much slower pace than Sonics. Though there are bugs a plenty, it is less likely that you will find yourself repeatedly falling to your death. Though, as you're required to play through the Sonic campaign for a while before unlocking the other characters, it's little consolation.
There are moments in the game where you can peer through the murky final product and get a glimpse of what the developers were aiming for. A few levels such as a post-apocalyptic future setting, complete with lava and demolished buildings is impressive and, at times, fun to play. While the plot is the worst kind of pretentious tripe, that's nothing new to the Sonic series. Ultimately, Sonic the Hedgehog is part of the hugely inconsistent Sonic Adventure series but has taken the flaws of the series to all new lows.
This game is one of poorest, laziest efforts in years. Major Sonic fans might find something to enjoy here but I don't think it would be even worth a rental for anyone else. It's such a bad job it's the kind of thing that shouldn't be bought on principle.
I totally loved sonic back in the day on the sega computer. but this game is awful. please save yourself the money and get something else!!
for the ps3, it has pretty poor graphics, is really hard to control the different characters, and the camera is very hard to get in to the right position. i also found the video clips seemed to freeze alot, and resulted in me needing to restart the playstation!
i also found that the game was very very difficult, which is why it is rated 12,but in the past this has always been a childrens game... so dont be tricked in to getting it for a younger child, as they will really struggle. i am 22, and i myself found it to be very frustrating!!
overall it is the worst playstation game that i have bought so far, hopefully the new sonic unleashed will be much better??
After loving the Sonic games on the Playstation 2, I brought Sonic The Hedgehog thinking it would be more of the same. However, the game isn't very fun and I quickly got bored.
The game is very different and doesn't feel like a Sonic game, you will free roam around a city and then find collectables and missions. The loading screens take along time and you will get bored just watching these. They are very often and you spend most of your time watching the same screen.
The game also controls very badly with the controls being very hard to master and also not very reactive.
The graphics are also very bad, and some of the worst I have ever seen on the Playstation 3. The voice actor is also rubbish and will quickly get on most people's nerves. The soundtrack isn't very good and the game has lots of framerate issues. The game also frezzes at times.
Overall, I think the game is very bad and needs to be improved if anyone wants to buy it. It is good buy for Sonic fans but everyone else should wait until the new game in December.
Sonic has failed in games recently and this is one of the worst.
The controls for sonic are so bad it acually makes you throw the controller, The only fun is playing as Silver and maybe Shadow
The thing is roming around town doesnt make you feel like your playing a Sonic game Oh, and the loading screens the loading screens suck so hard it takes 3 minutes to load and the voice actor suck.
Sonic has become roadkill
The story isnt bad but makes you feel sick when you think about how sonic and a princess fall in love...WTF?!
Sliver's story is the best as is his controls although thats not saying much.
To be honest I dont know much Shadow so I cant really talk about him.
In all its the worst PS3 game that I have ever played stay away at all costs it really does suck!
I mean it!
From my past experiance with Sonic the hedgehog games they are aimed at children around the eight or nine age bracket. However this game is really very hard to play hence the twelve plus age rating, the trouble is no one over the age of twelve would want to play this!
The little ones love trying to have a go but the controls are complicated and it is hard to navigate, especially with the jumps and staying on the rails.
The graphics are great just what you would expect from the playstation three very sharp and clear but not at all lifelike but then how lifelike is a blue hedgehog?
As I said the gameplay is very difficult to master especially for the age group who would want to play this. You seem to be able to get to level three and then not get past a certain point, many of my friends children have experienced the same thing.
If you are a adult and a sonic lover then this would be great for you, however I wouldn't recommend it for the kiddies unless you want to be playing it yourself when it gets too difficult for them to handle.
