Advantages: Great plot and characters, and gorgeous graphics

Disadvantages: Very repetitive gameplay, horrible scripted battles

As a Star Wars fan I had been looking forward to this for a long time. It seemed like the beginning of a new era for fans - one where the staccato history would be forgotten, and a fresh age of galactic genius would be awoken. As I popped the disc into the PS3's disc drive, I was not expecting to be able to describe this with footballing jargon.

You see, part of this really is brilliant. The story is one of the best the series has had in a very long time. It is gripping from the get-go - which is partly helped by the fact it begins with a ruthless Vader; who is cold throughout, yet is arguably masking a human vulnerability. Most importantly, though, Vader is awesome again. So, too, is his apprentice, Starkiller. Whilst he arguably changes Star Wars canon and the prophecy of the chosen one because of his immense power, he has an involving story, weaving, and often shocking story, making Starkiller a not at all a faceless protagonist. The wonderful supporting cast help raise the plotline to another level.

That's good, right? Yes it is. But what's not good is the gameplay. At the beginning it seems good - you get to throw Wookies about, sling rocks at your foes, use an immense amount of force lightning....but it quickly gets repetitive, and you end up button mashing and using the same combos over and over. And don't get me started on the scripted battles, which are frustrating and flow as smoothly as tar does.

So, here comes the footballing jargon - The Force Unleashed really is a game of two halves. Probably more so than football has ever been. The story is brilliant, the gameplay is utterly mediocre. Oh, alright, the graphics are nice too. So it is a game of two-thirds, but the most vital part of the game - the gameplay - lacks, and stops it from being the saviour of Star Wars, and instead leaves it as a good-looking interactive movie.

Summary: A disappointment, albeit a well-plotted one
