Uncharted: Drake's Fortune (PS3)
Advantages: Brilliant Graphics, Entertaining Cutscenes etc.
Disadvantages: Stupid Final Boss Battle
Uncharted: Drake's Fortune is in my list of the best ever Playstation 3 games. It is everything that Tomb Raider is with loads of better features, times 10!
You play as a character called Nathan, a treasure hunter in search of Sir Francis Drake's hidden treasure. Uncharted is the adventure of a lifetime, full of challenging fire-fights, tricky puzzles and humorous cut scenes.
Uncharted is a Third Person Shooter (TPS). It uses the standard 'L1 Aim', 'R1 Shoot' control layout, making for smooth run-and-gun game-play. The controls are brilliant, with very few, if any at all, glitches or faults. There are a variety of weapons available throughout the game, including; pistols, shotguns, assault rifles, sniper rifles etc. You can hold a combination of two weapons at any one time, making you think of which weapons to equip to suite the given situation.
The graphics and virtual environments are brilliant, they are extremely realistic and almost beautiful in parts. The game makes you use your mind, trying to find the correct route to the next area, to find the best way of getting past the enemy.
Uncharted uses a cover system, whenever you see a low wall or corner, you can use it to take cover by sticking to the wall, similar to the one in Gears of War. Some cover systems can become irritation, as you tend to stick to objects that you don't want to, but in Uncharted you very rarely seem to get this problem.
One brilliant thing about this game is the fact that once you have started and loaded the actual game, there are no more loading screens throughout the rest of the game, not even between levels. This is very useful!
During the game, you may come across hidden treasure and relics, all of which can be collected and viewed in the main menu.
Unfortunately the only major let-down in Uncharted is the last portion of the game. It is not only me that thinks this, it is widely agreed upon. The problem arose when 'mutated humanoid creatures' were introduced. Up to this point you have been in the world of reality, fighting human in jungles etc, but suddenly you are thrown into the world of fantasy, sprinting through underground bunkers in pitch darkness with hordes of creatures running at you. This is not as fun as it sounds, if you get hit more than once by one of these creatures you die, which is extremely irritating when you are in a small room with 20 of them.
I do hate spoiling games but I feel that I have to comment on the disappointing 'final boss fight'. After fighting through over 25 levels in the game, you reach the man responsible for all the resistance you have fought in the game. You are pumped to fight him to the death, and then, its over in under 20 seconds... The battle consists of jumping over 3 crates while being shot at, and then pressing the 'square' and 'Triangle' buttons when prompted, and that's it! I, among with several other people were very disappointed with the 'fight'.
The cut scenes are between 2 to 8 minutes long, but keep you entertained with sarcastic comments and further hilarity. But rest in the knowledge that at the end, Drake's treasure in in safe hands.
Apart from a few minor disappointments, this is definitely a must-have, it is an epic adventure to be renowned and enjoyed by everyone! Absolutely brilliant, I look forward to the next one!
Summary: Truely magnificant!
