Advantages: Gameplay, Mini game modes.
Disadvantages: Exactly the same as virtua tennis 3 with adjustments
Virtua tennis 09 is the fourth tennis game in the series and is the successor to Virtua tennis 3. It has a certificate of 3+ which means anyone can play it and it doesn't contain strong language or gory scenes.
Now we all know that tennis games can be very boring and offputting when playing for long amounts of time, and this game is exactly the same as most tennis games. You either Love it or Hate it.
Now this game recently has been criticised by big names in game reviewing such as IGN and CNET as being a remake of virtua tennis 3 with a few new animations, now I totally agree with that. If you bought the last one stick with Virtua tennis 3 as it is the same as Virtua tennis 09. One possible thing that they may have changed is the animations that the characters make when they go off wrong footed and reaching for the ball, and another is the recently added mini-game mode in which you train in numerous ways such as hitting snacks to zoo animals and sinking ships etc.
But what if you didn't buy Virtua tennis 3?
Well then I would recommend this to you as it is not a bad game all in all. You can compete in trophy tournaments and Online Doubles ranked matches and compete for the davis cup. The mini-game modes just add that extra bit of excitement into the game.
Online:
Now the Online modes can be quite good when error-free. Ever since I bought this game I have experienced problems with the Online Interface and I know many other people that have also. So the online feature needs to be fixed As soon as possible.
Trophies:
Also for all of you trophy hunters out there this game has a fair amount of trophies after the update by Sony stating that all Playstation 3 games made after 2009 must either be patched with trophies or have trophy content in them.
Platinum is rather easy to achieve with practice.
Gamplay:
The gameplay on this this game runs quite smooth and runs well, I have not experienced grainy picture or poor quality camera angles in the whole 3 months I have been playing this. But the controls are easy to use and rather difficult to master so only for the elite pro's at tennis games.
Summary: Buy if you don't already have it.

- 01/09/09 The online bit is the only thing that would likely tempt me, but as it sounds buggy, I reckon Top Spin still holds sway. :) |
