Re-Volt (PS)
by Thebaker50
Re-volt is a racing car game, but kind of with a difference. Instead of using large V8 engines, and super 4wd japanese saloons this game uses remote control toys. Yes... you drive around in an RC car in a sort of race. I will be honest with you on first playing with this game i was not impressed. The cars tip over fairly easily (or at ... least some of them do), and there are other various things like the silly turn speeds, and the fact that the large rc cars aren't much slower than the small ones etc etc.
But as i played the game, i started to like it. What this game does better than most is the way you interact with the environment. I need to expand on this. In most racing games, you simply follow a track. Now that is majorly the case in this game, except the track isn't a track, its a neighbourhood, or a museum, or whatever. ANd i love the way you go from one area to the next. FOr example, in the neighbourhood race, you end up driving down a sewage pipe, coming up, and bombing it down a block, before going across somones back garden, and so on and so forth. THis is a really sweet feature.
ALso i should mention you have weapons in this game. Nothing special by todays standards, but for the original playstation, this was pretty revolutionary. There are sort of 3 main weapons that i can remember (there may be more, but please forgive me, its been a few years i last played this). You could shoot out fireworks as sort of missiles from the front. Or drop these bombs that look like powerups. Or you could get a shield. YOu can also pick up nitroboosts as well.
Ok, so what about how to play. YOu can play with more than just 1 or 2p (but you can't race/fight bots with 2p, only 1p can you do this). And there are 2 main gamemodes, a sort of racing game, where the winner is first to cross the line. Or you can play a battle mode, where the first to land 10 hits (e.g. missile etc) wins. Personally i though 1p was better in race mode, and 2p was best in battle mode. THis kinda added some diversity.
So overall?
Certainly by todays standards this is not a great game. HOwever there are 3 things i loved about this game. 1stly i love the fact then when i was young, i obviously only had access to RC cars, and this sort of played into that. Secondly, this game had weapons in races, not many did at the time. And thirdly i liked the graphics, for the ps1 i though they were good.
Overall i am going to give this 4/5. Its a bit strange, and isn't very good at first, with no plot, but i feel its originality and the fact it was my favourite PS1 racing game carries it though. Read the complete review |

World Cup 98 (PS)
by vanman12
This game represents a teenage memory thats sits very well of a hot summer where we were all hopeful yet again for our countries chances for glory over the chanel in France.
Then of course reality kicks in and the boys were on their way home again amidst many boo's for player fopars such as Mr Beckhams tantrum with that ... Argentinian player! However as a 13 year old boy I had the chance to live out my dreams on my Playstation with England and my best attempts of me as a created player at centre forward winning the worldcup over and over again.
From what I remember this Fifa game was one of the first to introduce new and improved graphics and cut scenes of your team singing their national anthem and skills were added for clever trickery when working your way into the oppositions territory! Also impressive was the soundtrack which included the classic Tubthumping from Chumbawumba amongst other summery sounding classics from that tournament.
One of the few games that I feel Fifa got the balance of being good on the controller and being able to score absolute belters from 30 yards out before they started to opt for what we have today which is where they spend to much time making it look real but impossible to add any flare unless you have seven thumbs on each hand!
No doubt you will be able to download this on a newer console or pick it up for next to nothing somewhere but still worth a play especially to see some of the old names of football like Shearer, Ronaldo, Zidane etc etc!! Read the complete review |

Crash Team Racing (PS)
by doriee
I remember my dad coming home one day with a big stack of new games and me, my dad and my siblings sat there all night playing on the awesome game that is Crash team racing (CTR) A few months ago me and some friends (the same ones who I completed Crash 1-3 with) relived our childhood memories when we bought this from the Play station ... network on the PS3. This game was introduced after the first few Crash bandicoot games and the new characters that have been featured in them are the Characters you can race as on CTR including Crash and coco of course. The whole objective of the game is to choose your character, choose your track and win the races and the best thing about this game compared to other Crash games, it's multi player which was never seen in a crash game up until now. This game has a lot of option on how you can play it there is arcade, vs, battle and CTRA adventure.
Arcade, now this is what I like to re name "Practice" If you're playing this alone then go on arcade, basically you'll choose your character from the list and then a list of the tracks will come up, once you've chosen the character, track, difficulty level and number of laps your race will begin and this is basically you playing against the computer and that's why I like to call it practise, to can get up to date with your skills ready to go against your mates and beat them.
Vs is the bets part of the game in my eyes this is the multi player option, you can have 2 people playing this, I'd imagine if you was playing this on the PS1 with link cables that you could have more players but I haven't tried it yet. The screen will split in 2. Player one on the top and player two underneath so don't forget which one is you. You will choose your track and laps and off you go playing against each other and the other characters will be present too but controlled by the computer.
Battle is my least favourite and I don't really participate on this bit of the game but 2 players will go against each other going around different location trying to blow each other up with bombs and other various things out of boxes, the player with the most amount of hits wins after a certain amount of time.
CTR adventure is the real part of the game, this is where you load the world map and you will be instructed by the Mask what to do, You go around the map onto a warp pad that will send you to a race that you have to win first place, by doing this you unlock a new track, after winning each race the Mask will give you a tip on how to beat them. After doing all those tracks you will be given a key to unlock the boss race and once you have defeated the boss you will move on to more tracks and so on until you have done it 100%
The tracks themselves vary similar to the levels in the original crash games, they go through sewers, icy mountains, mines, dirt tracks and more. On a lot of the tracks there is almost always something to avoid such as seals or penguins this makes the game both fun and irritating at the same time. I like all the tracks except one. I hate without a doubt the hot air ways one. This is in the sky, it's very windy and there are no sides so it's very easy to go off and you can't see where you are going. (I hate it a lot) One of the best features of the game is that one every track there are boxes and you drive through the boxes and you will get an item, either a bomb, a shield, something to make you go fast, something to slow everyone else down and so on. Some of them are useless like the bombs, but the rockets target someone and get them so it makes them more worth while and of course you get the classic tnt boxes that you can lay all over the tracks if you get it in a box.
For it's time the graphics are really good, you can see they have tried to put effort in with the art work and the back ground of the tracks along with running water which for it's time again looks good. Some times you do get stuck on nothing which happens a lot in PS1 games. The music is just as good if not annoying as the actual Crash bandicoot games so playing this alone (practising) I always have this on mute because it's annoying.
My favourite way to play this game is in VS where I can play with my friends and we each take on the winner so everyone gets a go. My favourite track is "sewer speedway" and the type of track it is is in the name really, sewers, so it's underground and in water and what not. Once you've been playing this for a while (or look online how to go faster) you can do power slides and drifting which helps you go faster and I'm definitely a drifter when it comes to these races. This is a really enjoyable game and one you can play alone or with friends and still enjoy it just as much, it's really funny yet really stressful at the same time Read the complete review |
