Beware; this is NOT an opinion on Adidas Power Soccer 2, but the one that came before, it, Adidas Power Soccer.

For the price of around £7 (from any local bargain bin) you can get all of these on Adidas Power Soccer:

* Poor Graphics
* Annoying Commentary
* Unrealistic Goalkeepers
* False Player Names
* Un-Intelligent computer teams
* Un-inspiring Crowds
* Referee’s that make you want to hit the TV
* Stupid score lines
* Adidas adverts at half time
* No challenge at all
* A GOOD GAME!

Yes, despite of all the faults and annoyances, APS is still a brilliant game.

~ Aim of the Game ~

What do you think the aim is? Think about it. It has SOCCER in the title. What else do you think it could be? Ballet Dancing???

For all of you out there that have absolutely no idea what soccer is, I will give you a brief outline about what you have to do. This way, you won’t have to go around forever not knowing what Football is.

In football, there are 11 players on a team, 1 goalkeeper and 11 outfield player. A manager selects this team. Two teams then play each other.

The object of the game is to get the ball in the opponents net and whoever gets it in most wins. The end.

~ Graphics ~

The graphics on the game are spot on. Well-detailed and very life like. Yeah right. The graphics are appalling, even for one of the first Play station games that were brought out. I probably think this because of all the new games with ultra realistic graphics. I remember when I first bought it, I was astounded by the realism of it and I absolutely loved it.

Most of the graphics are concentrated on the Adidas advert at half time during the game. The graphics on the adverts are realistic. In fact, it IS real footage from an advert.

Other than a slightly above average intro (that is, if it was in the game) the game’s graphi
cs are rubbish.

~ Commentary ~

This is possibly the worst part of this 1996, developed by Pygnosis, game. It is either done by John Champion or John Motson, I am not sure because it doesn’t say on the game or in the manual.

All the commentator does is sit back and makes the odd comment on a happening on the game (i.e. a foul, a goal etc.). Even when he does say something, it is un-intelligent and has little or no relevance to the game. He is also sometimes stupid. For instance, say you are winning 5-0 and the opponent’s keeper save a shot; he will say ‘THIS KEEPERS UNBEATABLE TODAY!’ How sad.

~ Artificial Intelligence ~

The computer has none of this. The keepers actually have minus intelligence. You could be on the left post with the ball and he would still stand in the middle of the goal line as he always does.

It is also very easy to lob from the halfway line. Once you have found where to lob from, you’ll be winning 15-0 in no time. Unfortunately.

The strikers are also quite bad and are never in the right position to shoot or score. The also hardly ever attack or press forward and only do so if you let them run straight past you.

The worst in the outfield has to be the defence. They could be on their goal line with 10 opposition players coming towards them and they would still pass like there was no tomorrow.

The most annoying has to be the referee. They will accept any tackle from behind or two footed tackles from the front, but anything on the side is taboo. You may think that this is ok, but after a stoppage every 10 seconds, you start to get a bit peed off.

~ Crowd ~

The crowd are quite disappointing to say the least. All they do is sit there and be silent until there’s a goal. All you get then is a small 2-second burst of an attempted cheer.

The crowd also seem to have an invisible plastic fence to stop th
e ball from hitting them.

Also, the stadium is always full, even for the most boring of matches (Wimbledon versus Manchester City)

~ Playability ~

As I said way up above, this game may have an awful lot of faults, but it makes up for it in playability. I used to play on it for hours on end and still not get bored.

Now though, if I spent that amount of time on it, I would and could go on Ciao and all you people in cyber land wouldn’t be able to see me no more. That wouldn’t be nice now, would it?

~ Overall ~

Overall, this is a classically playable game with crap graphics. Good-bye!
