Advantages: Great fun, addictive, fast and furious

Disadvantages: Sometime the levels can be too similar

Apocalypse is an action game that I fell didn't quite get what it deserved. It was received as a fairly good game but I think it should have received a better status than it did. The game is a 3D platform, shoot em up action orientated game, where you frantically shoot things.

Sounds boring? Well let me tell you it certainly isn't boring. The main character in the game is supposed to be Bruce Willis (well supposed to be played by him) as the game is sort of like an interactive movie. This game was apparently going to be converted into a movie I think but no one ever got round to it. The game is about all of the stages of the apocalypse and the like, different levels are based in different locations, like the sewers, the city streets and so on. The story line become fairly clear if you know about the apocalypse and what it entails.

The action in the game is controlled by both the d-pad and the action buttons (x, o, square and triangle). The d-pad moves our hero around the 3D world with great ease, depending on the positioning of the camera, like most typical platform games. Then come the shoot em up aspects of the game. The shooting is controlled with the action buttons. Each button represents a direction of firing (i.e. triangle shoots forwards, x shoots downward and so on). It’s basically the action buttons are a d-pad to control the direction that you fire in.

You can jump and roll around with the shoulder buttons, and you can also change weapon and use smart bombs. The game has a large array of weapons ranging from a basic machine gun, to a flame thrower and rip laser (which is one of my favourites).

The graphics in the game are excellent, the effects on the guns are amazing and in parts of levels you can just stop and watch the graphical greatness of this game, for example you can just sit and watch a waterfall slowly trickle by, its all quite mellow to watch.

The action is always quite thick and fast, with
lots of enemies running around the levels trying to kill you, and helicopters firing loads of rockets and destroying the earth around you, its all laid out and structured quite well, just like an action movie. Your character scream some nice taunt when you kill people and fire you gun left, right and centre its quite funny hearing Bruce Willis shout 'open up a can o whoop ass'. Well it’s not that funny but it’s a neat touch.

Each level is fairly huge, and has some tricks and traps that you will have to get passed, like gaps in the platforms, the earth cracking, spot lights, that if you stand in you get shot to bits. It’s all quite good and extremely fun to play.

The game also has an excellent sound track which feature quite a number of heavy metal, trance style tracks from some well known professionals, i think system of a down are in their. And in parts of each level as the game is set in the future you get to see huge TV screens, which play some music videos. One of which features Limp Bizkit. The fact that the main character is played by Bruce Willis also gives the game that action movie film, i mean come on when it comes to action film Bruce Willis has done it all.

I shall tell you about my own experiences with this game, I was round a friends house with a number of my mates. There were 5 of us, we had a Playstation, and I took some games round his house to play with. We all planned on sleeping their but this game caused us to get no sleep what so ever. We were all hooked on this beauty of a game nearly all night. It was a hard task trying to get a go when someone was playing, as they were hooked on the screen. We were all enthralled and in awe of the game, it is that good.

Nearly every aspect of the game is well done, and make its seem like a well polished title, i would love to see this get turned into a movie one day. And if you like shoot em ups, and you need a new one to play, get this game, sure by
now it will be budget price. :)
