Advantages: Strong replay value, good music, multiplayer

Disadvantages: Save/load times, slight slowdown, item arranging

The PlayStation port of the PC role playing adventure and action is not without its problems. The game experiences some slow-down when there are plenty of enemies on the screen. Presentation-wise, it is fine except the save and load times are somewhat lengthy and Diablo requires many memory card blocks to save. This is perhaps not surprising given the attention to detail of the game where the locations of dropped goods as well as felled baddies are noted. So for storage you can leave stuff lying around the town. For the efficient a lack of auto-arranging and rotation rearranging of items does not help with the inventory juggling.

Diablo does not support use of the mouse, but absolute/relative control caters for movement in the isometric perspective. The beginner default controls did the job and are without the button combinations which the advance setup sees to, but the controls are customisable should the mappings not work out. As far as customisation goes, there are three character classes to choose from and four attributes for which to distribute points to on levelling up. The quests, of which there is a fair range of them, are picked randomly (?). What is truly neat however, is being able to save your character for loading up in a new game should the going get too tough (enemy numbers being finite), or for tackling Diablo at a higher difficulty level (should these be unlocked).

The auto-mapping is handy, and there was a need for the Fast game speed setting. The multi-player mode sounds well cool but sadly, I've not had the chance of playing it. The PlayStation version of Diablo is fairly rare, but it might work out to be cheaper than buying another computer for multiplayer!

Summary: Diablo for PlayStation - 7/10
