Advantages: Better than the first - Turok on PlayStation!
Disadvantages: A little too easy for experienced gamers...
I am. A little. How many versions of Resident Evil can one company kick out? More than one console can take! But thankfully this game is different, as it relies more on actually going round and killing dinos than having to sit and think about what you are actually doing, or saving all your ammo for the boss at the end. A little more towards an arcade version of Turok and awat from the goings on in Racoon City.
My girlfriend plays games like Tomb Raider and Dino Crisis, whereas I don't because I find them mind-numbingly boring and very easy (though Silent Hill was scary and good). "Oh look. I can jump to that," or "Funny that this key is shaped like that lock" doesn't really float my boat. Everything after Resi 3 just seems to be stealing aspects from it and jumping on the band-wagon and trying to scare people. But she likes them so I dip my hand in my bottomless pockets everytime one comes out. And I'm glad I got her this one.
The graphics are a little nicer than the first game, and the pre-rendered backgrounds are very life-like, with the shiny objects very visible, twinkling among the bushes or books as you enter the screen. Animation is good thought the three playable characters still spin on the spot without actually moving at all. The dinosaurs, while not on a par 'Walking With Dinosaurs', look how you think they should look and are scaled well(size wise, not scaly snake wise!), presuming that all the T-Rexs are quite young. The sound comes out of the telly sounding as real as dinosaurs could, seeing as no-one really knows, but some of the other effects are quite nice too. Like when a massive dino walks close by in a different section then you and you feel the footsteps hitting the ground through the pad, and then you see the water in the puddles ripple. Attention to detail is excellent, and this is only one of the many ways it shows its head.
As with all the other Capcom games of this genre, wh
en you get injured you carry that injury until you get medical attention, shown by slowly limping along, or allowing your dead arm to hang by your side. Due to the difficulty (easiness)aspect these injuries wont last long as there are more than enough medikits placed at every concievable point as to make the game very easy on the normal setting. Granted, I haven't seen what later levels are like, but hopefully they will pose more of a challenge.
And as with all other Capcom games of this genre you have to put up with those annoying animations of the character you are playing with go through doors. My girlfriend is playing the game on the PS2 after playing a few levels on PS1 and thses scenes are not speeded up at all, which is a shame.
But straight away from the start of the game you are thrown into the action, and you're running about with your shot-gun pumping big lizards full of lead. Kill a few in quick sucession and you'll get extra cash which you can then go and spend on bigger better guns and more explosive ammo. You can even take a few risks and hold your fire until the very last second before a Velocoraptor wraps its teeth around your throat and get a 'Counter' bonus, paving the way to massive magazines of rounds and other nicities. Nice touch!
I quite like this game because it is a step away from the other Resi clones. All the trademark animations and aspects are there for fans of the Resi series, but enough differences to make it enjoyable to those whoi aren't.
