Premium Review Emperor - Battle for Dune (PS): He Who Controls The Spice, Controls Dune (1010 words)

“He who controls the Spice, Melange, controls Dune” – Emperor: Battle for Dune is a RTS (Real time strategy) game set on a distant planet in the deep space. The planet is called Arrakis, a barren, harsh desert planet that is home to the most precious substance in the known universe- spice, Melange. This substance has unique properties, which are utilised by the Guild of Navigators who travel the vast expanses of space, and use the spice to ‘fold’ time and distance. A ‘War of Assassins’ has been declared by the Guild, and the three great houses fight for supremacy of the planet Arrakis, wealth and power beyond ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review How would you like to be Emperor of the known universe? (571 words)

Well first let me tell you, if you are interested in the Dune universe because you've read the Frank Herbert novels and you want to play a computer game which is faithful to these ideas and concepts you might wish to pass on Emperor: Batle for Dune. Westwood are the company that have developed there original RTS game, Dune 2 which came out in 1992 was arguebly, in its time, the greatest RTS ever. Now hopelessly dated with modern graphics and sound, it still is talked about, as a pioneer of p.c gaming. It was one of the first games which allowed you to command armies across vast maps to smite your enemies, you must effeciently manage your resources, whilst ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Emperor - Battle for Dune (PS): Westwood dive into the third dimension! (892 words)

WOW! Westwood finally bring their strategy games into the true 3rd dimension! Perhaps now, the days of 3 quarter views are over? Judging by this title, Perhaps the days are numbered, but only whe a number of refinements are made! The true 3d gameplay brings up issues of line-of-sight and other new tactics. This is what drew me into purchasing and playing this game. In Emperor, you can choose from 3 different houses - Atreides, Harkinnonen and Ordoss. The first is noble, righteous, the second is evil and brutish, whilst the third is just plain weird and scheming! THe balance of units is good, although I have taken to using the House of Atreides on a ...  Read the complete review

Westwood go up a dimension! (295 words)
by - written on 26/10/01
Rating:

Most people are attracted to the Westwood "Command & Conquer" series, Westwood haven't branded Emperor: Battle For Dune under this title and so will not have the mass appeal of previous games like "Red Alert" and "Tiberian Sun", however the gorgeous graphics, wide variety and pure playability is sure to gain Westwood only more fans if people would give it a chance. Emperor, you see, fails in its multiplayer internet capability, hampered by the lack of online players compared to the traditionally packed servers of previous smashes mentioned beforehand. This is a serious disadvantage to gamers who buy RTS games solely for the internet ...  Read the complete review
