Released by Squaresoft in 1996 to overwhelming critical acclaim, Final Fantasy VII (FF7) rapidly became the biggest selling game on Sony’ PlayStation console, and remained in the number one spot as most popular game in consumer surveys right up to the replacement of that console with the PS2. It’s easy to see why FF7 was so popular as, despite some of its graphical limitations and gameplay flaws, it remains unbeaten as the most engrossing and atmospheric console RPG (role-playing game) without having to introduce difficult elements that make some PC equivalents less attractive to the average gamer. BACKGROUND Like all good RPGs, the ... Read the complete review

Final Fantasy 7 was without a doubt THE game that really gave the Playstation a good reputation. Imagine the times. Its 1997, and the Playstation has been around for a few months. It needs a really good game to boost its sales and really set it on its way. And what better game than Final Fantasy 7. The fantastic graphics, immense game play and engaging story got the ball rolling and paved the way future titles. The final fantasy series has sold 31 million units worldwide, and Final Fantasy 7 can claim to be the game that really boosted these figures. Although there are now FF8 and FF9 available for Playstation, in my view FF7 still remains the pick of the bunch. ... Read the complete review

This game is getting old now. There are in fact 2 newer version (final fantasy 8 and 9) and the 10th instalment is being written. Why are you writing this review then? Well you can find this game on budget now. And that’s the main reason for this review. Look! - Squaresoft make fantastic games. Its that simple. And in my opinion this is the greatest of all. I picked it up for about 12 pounds on budget from a console shop. It’s probably my best console game I bought to date. What sort of game is it then? Well for the most part it’s a role-playing game. But I found many parts to resemble Point ... Read the complete review

It's fair to say that, prior to the 1997 release of Final Fantasy VII, role-playing video games weren't really a part of the mainstream market. Sure, the Zelda's and Wonderboy's had gained a good cult-following in the past, but the game world was in need of a new kind of RPG - one made in three dimensions. It's 1997, and Squaresoft have been beavering away at the seventh instalment to their long-running Final Fantasy series for quite some time. It would be the first part of the series to appear on the PlayStation console; the first game to be spread across a whopping three discs; and yes, you guessed it - the first FF to play in complete 3D. It would prove ... Read the complete review

I've been holding off from doing this review because I didn't want to sound like a gushing fan boy, but I am one so I can't deny it much longer. This is the greatest game ever made, and I spent an entire school holiday on it once. A bit sad, yes, but there you go. Widely-accepted as one of the best games ever made, Final Fantasy VII broke a lot of ground when it came out. It was the biggest RPG on the market, the most in-depth, and it had an incredibly strong and developed storyline, fleshed out with characters you emphasised with, or loved to hate. It had a depth to it that no other game had managed, but countless have tried to match since its ... Read the complete review
