Advantages: Funny, easy to pick up and play kinda game
Disadvantages: Maybe a little bit too short
Anyone who has played worms will be familiar with the basic premise of hogs, use your substantial firepower to bbq your opponents into submission.
Hogs is similar to worms in basic gameplay but in glorious 3d and with homicidal hams instead of anarchic annelids.
The action is turn based and there is a gauge at the top of the screen to adjust the trajectory of the various missiles you'll be hurling at your porcine opponents, and holding the fire button for a length of time will determine the power behind the shot.
You take control of a plucky young platoon of pigs with a choice of six factions
-Tommys Trotters (British)
-Garlic Grunts (French)
-Uncle Hams Hogs (American)
-Piggystroika (Russians)
-Sushi swine (Japanese)
-Sow A Krauts (Gemans)
There are no differences between the factions except a differently coloured uniform, each country also has its own humerous (but awfully stereotyped) accent.
The voice acting is done by the hilarious Rick Mayall but is rather hammy (sorry i had to do it). Mayalls comical tones suit the feel of the game nicely and really bring these Battling Bores to life.
After selecting your pigs faction you then name and promote each member of your 8 man squad to one of four classes, Heavy Weapons , Engineer, Espionage & Medic using coins that are allocated after a succesful victory. Each promotion improves your weapons and increases the amount of health of your pigs. There are 5 promotions for each hog in total.
Although there are 8 pigs in your squad there are only 5 on the playing screen at any one time with the sausagey surplus ready to replace any perished pigs.
The weapons at your disposal range from the ubiquitous bazooka to the less often seen poison gas which renders (excuse the pun) your pig infectious to anyone who gets near him. Air strikes and special ops can be called in to any point on the map.
Some of the games numerous maps contain dangers such as land mines which devostate any who get too close and lakes which steadily take off health until you can scrabble back onto dry land.
There are armoured turrets and even tanks to commandeer which give your boys a distinct edge in the five campaigns they will be undertaking, each campaign:
-Hogshead
-Bellyopolis
-Trotsville
-Arstria
-Isle Of Swill
Each campaign contains four or five maps except the Isle Of Swill which contains only one.
This is a really fun game which is the ultimate remedy to the stream of in depth ultra serious games that flood the gaming market of today. Not that ive got anything against such games but sometimes your just in the mood to pick something up and play.
I cant reccomend this game enough, to anybody who likes games really.
Summary: Great game!!!!
