You can play Heart of Winter either by finishing Icewind Dale, in which case you'll move right into the expansion, or by starting an "expansion only" game. If you choose to do the expansion only game, you can import your characters from the original game Or you can import some special pregenerated characters that have been designed for use with this expansion pack.
