Advantages: good expansion, if you like icewind you will probably like that expansion

Disadvantages: too short

You can play Heart of Winter either by finishing Icewind Dale, in which case you'll move right into the expansion, or by starting an "expansion only" game. If you choose to do the expansion only game, you can import your characters from the original game Or you can import some special pregenerated characters that have been designed for use with this expansion pack. They're high-level characters that will allow you to handle the high-level monsters that you'll face. You could also try creating new characters, but that would make the game impossible to play.

There are some new special abilities available. Rangers have a new tracking skill that lets them try to detect an enemy's presence in an area. Druids also have new shape-changing abilities. And, of course, there are new spells for your magic users. There's also new magical items in the game. If you're importing over your characters from the original game, though, you probably won't have much use for the new items. The armor and weaponry you have will be sufficient for slaying the monsters that you'll encounter.

Unfortunately, not all is good with this expansion pack. Even though the story's interesting, it only allows you to explore a handful of locations.
The biggest problem with the expansion is that it's way too short. You'll easily finish this game in just one or two days.
