After having had so much fun, albeit short-lived, with Tomorrow Never Dies, I decided to get a first person shooter that had a bigger challenge. The reviews I read for Medal of Honour where all good, and it was on the Platinum label, so I decided I’d give it a go. It’s a first-person shooter set in the Second World War. Your job is to infiltrate a lot of Nazi territories, sabotaging their plans and destroying plans and weapons they can use against the allies. It’s just you against plenty of Germans, and the task won’t be easy. Not only does it require brawn, it also requires a bit of brains and skill – you’ll have to plan ... Read the complete review

*A review of Medal of Honor for PlayStation.* CONTROLS There are a couple of controller configurations and aiming options but these cannot be changed during a level and there's no adjusting the horizontal/vertical axis sensitivity. I did find a setup to suit me and I did have a need for the aim button as this brings up a target cursor - it can pay off to aim for head shots given the weaknesses of the weapons. PRESENTATION The War Room as hub to the modes is neat, and the likes of the war footage (which you can skip) and weapons bring about an authentic feel to the game. The musical score and sound effects really add to the atmosphere of ... Read the complete review

As the old song goes, "War, hnggh, what is it good for, absolutely nothing.". Well, that isn't quite true. The Second World War, for example, has provided us with many great films (Saving Private Ryan, The Great Escape), something interesting to do in history lessons, a universal figurehead of evil (the Nazi party), and sweeping social changes throughout the world (some good, as in Britain's welfare state, and some bad, as in the fall of Eastern Europe to communism). It seems that the feeling of watching old Gerry defeated time after time lives on in the hearts of most Britons. And Medal Of honor seems to fit that bill nicely. First things ... Let’s get one thing straight right from the very start, shall we? In no way do I mean to be little the efforts and actions of those brave men and women who risked – and lost – their lives protecting this world from the wretched and evil war machine of Adolf Hitler. So don’t write in. But let’s face it, the events that we call WWII have made for some stunning examples of entertainment medium. We delighted in the comic book exploits of Commando and Victor. We marvelled at the cinematic imagery of Saving Private Ryan. Now we thrill to the heart-pounding, hand-cramping video-game shenanigans that is Medal of Honour. Conceived ... Read the complete review

One of my favourite Playstation games of all time was the sequel to this game, Medal of Honor: Underground. A wildly entertaining first person shoot-'em-up in which you got to run around occupied Europe (and North Africa) during the Second World War, the game was the closest thing to Where Eagles Dare that I've found in game form. And while there was the odd niggling doubt at the back of my mind ('the war probably wasn't quite this much fun if you were actually there'), the game made me forget all that as I ran around gunning down German troops and French collaborators with wilful abandon. So when I finally got myself a Playstation a few ... Read the complete review
