Advantages: Great Graphics, Fun Racing, Fast Trucks
Disadvantages: Ultra-realistic, Steep learning curve, sometimes Robotic AI
This game, while not being blessed with the best title in the world is actually a very good game. Mercedes-Benz Truck Racing is an extremely realistic game; it would take the ‘average’ (grrrr I hate having to say that :p) gamer about 30min+ to get used to the handling. However, for the persistent gamer, will enjoy some of the best racing on the Playstation (and PC which is the format I have it on). It is exhilarating to be driving round in a massive truck at 100m.ph+ beating and banging with other trucks and powersliding (yes POWERSLIDING in a lorry). Once the handling has been cracked the learning curve is steady, but still rather steep. The AI can also be rather robotic at times, which is especially annoying to a beginner, but not as noticeable once you have the hang of the game. I must mention the physics engine, which is superb - almost on a par with Geoff Crammond's GP3 - But I personally have never managed to topple my Merc. All the tracks are modelled correctly, with run-off areas and gravel traps in all the right places. The graphics (especially on the PC) are extremely good, and parts will fall of your Merc if you aren't careful. You can bust the engine, and when this happens thick clouds of white smoke pour out of the exhaust and radiator. You may also witness some of the biggest crashes you are ever likely to see in a racing game short of the NASCAR games. The sound is also great; the engine sounds may have been recorded. I like the in-game music as well, but that might just be me. The Navigation through the menus can be difficult as there are so many options. Truck racing is, perhaps, not the most obvious choice for a horsepower-fed, thrills and spills, piston-pumping action, but you should at least try this game out. If you can figure out the handling you will be well rewarded. The_bulldog
