During one of my periods of unemployment and with far too much time on my hands I became re-addicted to one of my childhood favourites. I did actually write this review then but somewhere along the lines it got lost in one of my many, many notebooks and it's only re-surfaced now. Before I start this review I must point out that this game was first released in 1997, which would have made me about nine years old when we first got the game. How many games in the world can successfully grip both a nine year old and a twenty two year old? My guess would be that there aren't a lot, but Monster Rancher can and successfully has! I have to admit I hadn't expected to find such an old game on this site to review, although as old games go this is one of the best. It follows in the same vague direction as the Pokemon and the Digimon craze, with you raising monsters and fighting in contests with them. The main difference is that you are not exploring the world and fighting in different gyms as you do in Pokemon, you are based in a farm with a helper to train your monsters with you. You train the monsters in various exercises that increase power, defence, agility, and intelligence which then help you in the cups which you fight in to gain rank, money and reputation. Now I'm 15. I don't like the Pokemon craze, and Digimon gets on my nerves. When my 12 year old brother picked Monster Rancher up, I didn't really care. But, after watching him play, I thought "hey, this looks kinda cool." So I had a go. And it really is kinda cool! And now I sound like a 12-year old. So let me tell you about the game.
