Premium Review Pong (PS): The classics always come back (258 words)

I saw this video games programme the other day and it had the original version of 'Pong' from the 1970's and I just had to have a go on it. It looked top (I know, very sad.) So I went on a rampage of the town and found it for the playstation for a bargain price of £9.99. The first few levels are the basic 'Pong' idea, and then the later levels progress. The general idea is carried throughout but obsticals are added such as wind and water. To be very honest, I think it spoils the game slightly, but it is a nice addition. The new Pong has much improved graphics from the 70's original (obviously) with each level being on different moving ...  Read the complete review

Am I right in saying the original Pong was the first game to use a graphical interface? Maybe. Anyway, that game (2 paddles, 2 goals, and one bouncing ball) still forms the basis of this latest edition. I usually approach remakes of classic games with trepidation as they rarely live up to reputation (e.g. Space Invaders and more recently Rampage World Tour), since the old concepts can no longer compete in the ever technologically advancing gaming world. This version of Pong however completely blasted away any such doubt. The game is fantastic – its amazing how many ways the programmers have wangled different games out of one simple concept. Take one ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Pong (PS): Ping..... PONG!!! (156 words)

Yes, Pong. The original video game, which the older ones amongst us may remember - black and white screens, the odd bleep here and there. There was absolutely nothing to it at all, and yet it was hugely addictive. It was therefore only a matter of time before someone did a conversion whether it was a good idea or not. Only this isn?t really a conversion at all - there are so many bizarre variations on the original game (magnets? PENGUINS?) that you?ll hardly recognise it. Bizarrely, they?ve even incorporated a sense of humour into it - the bats even sulk when they lose (are you still with me????? Stick with it?.) Fortunately, the basic concept (hit the ball, then hit it ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review The First Game Ever? (302 words)

This was the first game ever made. Or was it? It was made in 1972 and was also the first arcade machine made. Years later it was brought out for the atari. Theres also been other versions of this game made. Also its been brought out for other consoles over the years. Its the most basic game ever made. Its a game played by two players. Either one or two players at a time. You both play a simply white stick. Which could only move up and down. The only other thing in this game is a white ball. The idea of the game was to hit the white ball behind your opponents stick. This was like the goal area. You then earned a point for that. Every time a ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Pong (PS): pong? it certainly does (139 words)

I bought Pong hoping for some good old fashioned fun, but was bitterly disappointed. I found the game very slow, and nearly fell asleep when playing two player, having time to go and make a cup of tea mid play ( well, almost). The game seems to have been aimed at the child end of the market, but as anyone knows a childs attention span is lower than ours, and my 3 year old was off playing with his trucks within minutes. Although the pooing penguins was quiet amusing first time around, they didnt do much else to add to the fun. I wouldnt waste my money again if I had the chance, I eould go out and buy Bust A Move instead if I was in the ...  Read the complete review
