Released as a spin-off to the classic Resident Evil franchise, Gun Survivor is a pretty atrocious light gun game that has been universally canned since its release in 1997. In an interesting move, it takes the genre to a first person shooter level, whilst simultaneously obliterating any sense of style or atmosphere the two previous games had worrked to establish. You basically walk around a big precinct shooting zombies, and not in a good way. Ammo is more or less unlimited, so there's barely any sense of peril, and there's too much health kicking around. Progression items are too easy to find and the zombies are too easy to kill. You basically just blaze ... Read the complete review

You wake up in a dark alleyway beside a blazing helicopter explosion. Your head throbs with the effort to try and remember who you are and how you ended up in this vaguely familiar world. Your hand holds a trusty pistol with plenty of ammo and all around you are vast amounts of undead zombies, giant spiders, demon dogs and other such like just waiting to naw at fresh human flesh. Sound scary? Well, it should be! The game is similar to those of other resident evil games with the exception that the game is played in a first-person perspective and the gaming style is in the style of "House of the dead". This time, however, you control where you want to go ... Read the complete review

I cannot believe that Capcom have screwed up one of the best oppurtunities ever. This is easily one of the worst games that they have ever made. I had always wanted to play Resident Evil in first person and now here was my chance but...... The idea behind the game is great. Instead of an on the rails shooter like Time Crisis and The House of The Dead the guncon is used to control your characters movement as well as for blasting zombies to pieces. This main problem is that the idea has been executed so badly. Movement is incredibly hard. Holding the trigger makes you walk forward, the B button makes you turn in a direction, double tapping the trigger ... Read the complete review

Only for Dooyoo would I revisit this mess which for me tainted the Resident Evil brand for good. Fair enough it's a departure from the tried and tested format, and I'm all for originality, but in this case the addage must be "if it aint broke don't fix it". Instead of the usual RPG format the game is a Doom style first person shooter. You play the part of an amnesia sufferer who wakes up in the ubiquitis zombie infested town. You begin with a handgun and can pick up other weapons such as a shotgun, magnum etc-basically your usual RE arsenal. The mission is basically to shoot zombies and other nasties and to discover your true identity-will you be good or ... I love the Resident Evil games, but I am not a blind fanboy; they cannot do no wrong, and one of the few blemishes on the fairly robust track record of the series is Gun Survivor, a brave but ultimately foolhardy attempt to reinvent the series in the first person. You have to use the Namco light gun to shoot the baddies, while using the A and B buttons to walk left and right. And yes, it's as clunky as it sounds. While we are looking back on it many years later, this was a fairly ugly game even when it was first released. It has not a single cut-scene and tries to get by on some laughably bad engine-rendered cut-scenes, which don't make the cinematic grade ... Read the complete review
