Advantages: It plays different enough from other Resident Evil games to warrent a couple of goes.
Disadvantages: After a couple of goes, you will have seen it all.... and possibly want to kill yourself for wating so much of your own time.
Hot on the heals of Resident Evil 3 - Nemesis comes what was billed as the next step in resident evil gaming, Resident Evil - Survivor. On the outside this game bears all the hallmark trates of the series; zombie death, huge enimies, challenging puzzles and a difficulty level unsupassed by games in its janura. And then you actually play it. Instantly you will notice the horrible low-resloution graphics caused by the 3D enviroment, and lazy programmers. There are polygon jaggies everywhere. Many as bad as some of the first way of original Playstation games back in 1994. From the outset you know that the 3D doom esq perspective is used as nothing more than a gimick for this game. Proving both awarkward to combat with and visually poor throughout. Capcom have finally sold out the Resident Evil series and turned it into a poor mutant of what it formally was. Many where put of by the challenging external views of the original series, and in my opinion that was what made the game so great. The 3rd person perspective was great proving both instictive to use and difficult to play with at first. Survivor removes this factor. No more do you have to carefully aim a shotgun blast to the head. Now you can use the auto-aim and crosshair. Removing the tense moments of battling a monster, not knowing if you are hitting it or not. The 3D view also slows down gameplay quite a lot compared to the frantic gameplay or Re2 or RE3. This gameplay angle causes, much awarkwardness when battling enemies and because they kept the original shooting format of not being able to move and shoot at the same time. This causes much anger and frustrating as three enemies jump around you, slashing at you to bits, and because of the 1st person view, you can't see where you or they are going very well. The small fact they also didn't bother creating any new enemy characters for this game also angered me greatly. All the char
acters are lifted straight from RE 1 and 2, however in the low res 3D enviroment they look terrible, like doom on a old 386 with 2 mb of Ram blocky!!!!! Maybe I was expecting to much from Survivor. However the lacklusture gameplay proved way to easy for myself, and many of my friends. Without wanting to sound like a expert, I did complete the game in hard mode on only my second go after owning the game for only five hours. Not something you can typicially associate with the RE series. The ease in which you can complete this game is startling, almost embarrassing to say the least. There are multiple routes throughout the game however wheather or not you wish to play through them, you might find the game that bit more interesting for a few more hours. The basic start of the game beging with you climbing out of your crashed helicoptor, with amnesia (conviently) and your hand gun. You know you where here for a reason, and that you must find out what happened. So ensues a meandering tradigy of a game with three (count em) plot twists depending on the routes you take throughout. Where in you discover you aere of course the good guy and you where sent to this island to invstigate umbrella by Leon Kennedy (RE2), and that the island is infact one of many processing plants for Tryants and the only way they can make Tyrants is using some kind of chemical found only on preteenage children. Why didn't they call this game "Invasion of the slightly intimadating brain sucking lawyer types from america", might have sold a few more then. Mind nummingly boring would be an understatement, however being a true RE fan I played through all three seranoes, and decided one thing. This game is pants. not just pants, but a huge pile of unwashed smelly pants from a Glasgow University students wash box. Belive me it smells. As a huge fan of the Resident Evil games (I own all the Playstation and Saturn versions of 1, 2, and 3 in
cluding Directors cuts of 1 and 2), I bought this. I appeal to you don't. Spend your money on a much better game, Silent Hill or Fear Effect. Both can be found in shops everywhere and are a worthy alternative. I bought this cheaply for only £10, and I would refuse to pay full price for a game of this quality. Pants. Smelly Pants. Avoid and spend your money elsewhere.
