Advantages: Great unique gameplay, a game which challanges your mind and ability, actually scary!!
Disadvantages: You will have no social life for weeks, need new underware
In 1987 Capcom redefined the beat em' up genre with the start of the high and mighty Street Fighter series, but in 1996 when they unleashed Resident Evil onto the Playstation not only was this hailed as one of the greatest games ever to be made, but it brought a new gaming genre and made sure you would never be safe in front of your computer screens again. 1996 wasn't the only the year that 17 million selling series began, but as I said it was the year survival-horror was born! This genre gave a new element to game playing, making sure the gamer was uneasy at all times as it combined a number of styles all at once: shooting, adventure and puzzle. This what made Resident Evil the gaming masterpiece it is as it appealed to a number of different types of gamers! Raccoon City, a quiet mountain town, is about to experience a terror like non-other and you have the pleasure of taking part .......... taking on the role of either Chris Redfield or Jill Valentine, you are a member of S.T.A.R.S (Special Tactics And Rescue Squad) investigating a string of gory attacks by strange unidentified creatures near a biotech lab. The two teams sent to investigate are Alpha and Bravo, on arrival you loose communication with Bravo and find yourself in an isolated mansion, which is defiantly not empty!! As I said this game combines many different genres and throughout the game you will experience them. The main aim of the game is to get your sorry hide out of that mansion but it isn't a walk in the park. As littering the corridors are the walking dead and a variety of different incarnations infected with the deadly virus. You must dispose of these abominations using what ever weapons you can get your hands on, which include: combat knife (worst weapon in the game), handgun (useful but that’s alot of bullets to kill creatures), flamethrower (you only get it to use for awhile), colt python (magnum, kills with one shot) and a bazooka (you need this), ammo can
be hard to come by sometimes so watch what your shooting!! Puzzles play a big part in the game, as the mansion and surround land have many secrets hidden away! Puzzles come in a variety of forms flicking switches, moving statues, collecting gems and so on. But the beauty is that you may collect something early on in the game and not need to use it for ages, this can be annoying at first but after awhile your brain soon clicks and exploring the hidden passageways of this freaky house will become soon become second nature to you. Graphically this game is not up to day’s mountain high standards, but remember it was released 5 years ago so it is defiantly forgiven! Character movement is good and if you get "Resident Evil Directors Cut" gore is amplified (which is always good)!!! Unfortunaly this game has taken on some of the effects of aging, with things that are suppose to be scary just seem cheesy, like the Evil Dead movies, but unlike those movies it doesn't make the game funny just you respect it more!! The game is also a bit empty with just the solo game for players and no multi play, all do you must complete it about four times to get the secret costumes in, its life line is quite short! But defiantly do not be teetered it is defiantly one of the greatest games ever made, spawning a generation of spin offs (not including the four other Res Evil games) such as Silent Hill, Dino Crises 1 + 2, Devil May Cry and a hell of alot more!! This game is very hard to come by, but if found will be cheap, so don't hesitate to buy and I am sure you will have a number of restless nights!!
