Advantages: Scary as hell!, Gory and damn well fun, stick a grenade in a Zombie's mouth, go on., Classic storyline with incredible depth and desire for discovery.
Disadvantages: Fans of the series would like a new story although the new additions add more depth to the ENTIRE storyline
The first Gamecube Resident Evil game is a complete remake of the original Resident Evil, whilst new games are in development (Resident Evil 0 and 4) this re-release will show you what this games will be like fear wise. After a week of slaving away at the game I have finally left the mansion for good, which enables me to tell you what I thought. Now the main point that has to be made is that Resident Evil is a scary game, not necessarily due to the monsters or the spooky locations but the fear of not knowing what happens next. Now this game is exactly what Nintendo need to show off the Gamecube, incredible audio, breath taking graphics and a really mature title on a Nintendo system. So as you can tell the game has many qualities and the graphics really are belief beggaring. The detail is astounding and the lighting effects are creepy. Graphics in a Resident Evil game is very important, the game relies a lot on atmosphere and due to the power of the Gamecube it has been able to realize this atmosphere. The graphics are pre-rendered and so the Polygons can all be concentrated on making the character models look incredible. Audio wise you have some of the creepiest sounds you?ll ever hear. As Zombies crash through windows the music picks up-tempo dramatically and the lull the music has put you in has been broken making you panic-stricken. They are some chilling sounds as well including the Moonlight sonata played on the Piano. It is all very crisp and the noise of moaning zombies and the footsteps of hunters do fill you with fear. You play as either Jill Valentine or Chris Redfield; you are in Alpha team of S.T.A.R.S. Your comrades in Bravo team go missing after investigating mysterious murders, you are sent into search. Upon arrival in the middle of nowhere you are attacked by a pack of flesh eating dogs and take refuge in a near by mansion, a mansion that happens to be inhabited by strange creatures. After the majority of your friends go missing you start a
search to try and find your friends and escape the mansion, but can all your friends be trusted? And what really happened here? So begins a game that likes to scare the hell out of you. The story line is extremely compelling and the sense of achievement is overwhelming. You may be worried by some criticisms about the game, but criticisms such as annoying door scenes, poor camera angles, frustrating controls and that you can only hold a few items at a time, are all deliberate. The door scenes are to build up suspense before you get into the next room, the camera angles are set in such a way that you don?t know what?s round the next corner, the low amount of items you can carry is to add an element of item management, and the controls are only ever annoying when you are trying to escape an enemy and this is deliberate to scare you. As normal, Resident Evil features buckets of blood but with the improved graphics it looks far messier and certain scenes are more graphic. But what about the ones who have played the game before? Well fear not because this is even better if you?ve played the game before. Naturally the graphics add an entire new element to the game, there will be doors that you will see and you will go ?I don?t remember that being there?? most puzzles are totally different with only a handful remaining the same. There is an entire addition to the storyline featuring the owners of the mansion; including George Trevor and his daughter Lisa Trevor who is now an on-going bad guy similar to Nemesis in Resident Evil 3. The storyline with the Trevor?s means entire new areas to the game that are both large with new puzzles and more items to find. But why is this game BETTER for those who have played it before? Well in one section of the game old Resident Evil fans will remember dogs burst through the window, you?ll walk along the corridor waiting for it to happen but it never does. This suspense only exists for us gamers who enjoyed the first gam
e, in fact Capcom even made the glass break a little just to make you jump, panic and get your gun out when nothing actually happened. It?ll scare you silly. Dringo

- 31/10/02 Great game, great opinion. Wish I had more time to devote to it, but I made the mistake of buying Rogue Leader at the same time, and that's just sucking away my life! |
