Advantages: Great Fun, Looked Nice, Just Like an Arcade Game
Disadvantages: Very short by today's standards, only a few courses, Ridge 4 is much better
Okay, Ridge Racer Revolution is getting on a bit these days, but way back in 1996 this was among the best arcade racers on the PlayStation. Essentially just a re-make of the original Ridge Racer, this featured a brand new circuit (branched in to three tracks, and raced in reverse later on - so six tracks in all), a few new unlockable cars and some nicer graphics. Oh, and you could play a level of the classic arcade shoot 'em up Galaxian's while it loaded! The chief problem with Revolution was the lifespan - a veteran of the first game could probably finish it with a couple of days, and though there were now ultra-fast devil and angel cars to beat, these weren't going to hold up for long. However, Ridge Racer Revolution's main concern was to mimic the performance of the arcade game as well as possible, and in my opinion at least, it managed it quite admirably. If you prefer power-slides and checkpoints to qualifying and tuning options, then it is difficult not to have fun here. The tracks are brilliantly design and the way day morphed into night mid-race was, back in its day, a smart thing. It may be tough for awhile but give it some time and it will pay you back in rewards.
