Small towns have always been scary places. With no pizza delivery and evidence of a small gene pool, lonely travellers should best pass by. But there is one place even more terrifying than most. A place where everyone’s up to no good – Meadowell. Oh, Silent Hill isn’t too nice either. From the mysterious opening sequence you manage to glean that you are single parent Harry Mason who has carelessly misplaced his daughter, Cheryl after crashing his jeep. Awaking in the town of Silent Hill, you must guide Harry to find his sprog and, along the way find out why Silent Hill has become such a seething pit of evil. In much the same way as ... "The fear of blood tends to create fear for the flesh." This cryptic and macabre line is the first thing you see when you load up Konami's Silent Hill (straight after, "There are violent and disturbing images in this game"), and thus begins the most frightening videogame experience I've ever had. Silent Hill was released in 1998 for the PlayStation and received critical acclaim but unfortunately not a great reputation with gamers. Some people saw it as a tired old Resident Evil clone, unfavourably comparing the lack of explosive firepower with Capcom's famous survival horror franchise. Some people thought it was too hard and some ... Read the complete review

SIlent Hill. Nice title, isn't it? Not too blunt like Resident Evil, not too obtuse like Koudelka. It's just right, sort of an understated kind of title. However understated isn't the kind of adjective you can apply to any other part of the game as this is scary stuff. You start off with an FMV which pretty much brings you to speed with the games plot. You are Harry Mason, a widower, and you're taking your little daughter, Cheryl, on holiday to a little village called Silent Hill. Ah, how lovely! While driving your jeep along the road a motorcycle appears behind you and is all over the road. You swerve to avoid it and end up on your side in the ... Read the complete review

Yes, I know, I'm not going to win any awards for being up to date, but Silent Hill is such a classic, I thought another review wouldn't hurt. Silent Hill is your common or garden Japanese survival horror game from makers Konami. The game play involves general exploring, puzzles and combat. So far so straightforward. What makes Silent Hill stand out, or at least did make it stand out when it was released was just how completely nerve-shredding it all is. You're character starts off in Silent Hill after a car crash, and your young daughter runs off into the mist surrounding the town. You give chase after her. Silent Hill is a standard looking kind of ... Read the complete review

In life, there are a few things we know to be true: 1. If you only watch one episode of the first showing of a new TV series, and then, six months later, tune into the repeat series, you will always see the same episode. 2. The average time between throwing something away and needing it badly is one week. 3. You should never, ever go on holiday to a place called Silent Hill. Though, through experience, Harry Mason was no doubt up to speed with those first two rules, he’d clearly never taken the time to learn rule number three. Stupid, stupid man. Separated from his young daughter, Cheryl, following a car crash just ... Read the complete review
