Advantages: Cheap and easy to find
Disadvantages: No games being made for it any more
I originally owned my first Playstation when they were new, I didn't buy mine right away though. Instead I was sensible and waited for a 1st then 2nd price drop when I bought mine in 1996. New games were still being released pretty much every week so you had a huge choice.
I've had my current Playstation for over 8 years now having bought it off Ebay with a few games, a memory card and an extra controller for under £30. It was slightly damaged (the aerial input wire is a bit loose) but it works fine with a bit of tape to keep it in place.
Games are still very easy to come by and just keep getting cheaper & cheaper. Extra memory cards & controllers are also still cheap and will work if you ever decide to upgrade to a PS2.
The Playstation is a work horse, it has good and bad games but the good ones really make the best of its onboard hardware. Its cd player is still one of the best around and is one of audios best kept secrets.
Slimline PS1's or original chunky case Playstations are still easy to find, you might even find the one you've bought has a mod chip fitted allowing you to play imported games.
Like the Atari 2600, the original Playstation has now entered the realms of classic console fame.
Summary: Sony showed the world what consoles could be
