Advantages: Plot, soundtrack
Disadvantages: price, hard to find
Suikoden has to be one of the best RPGs that I have ever played in my life. The gameplay is fun, the soundtrack is amazing, and the storyline is well-written. There are lots of twists and turns to the plot of this game. With that being said, I will give very limited plot information. I will NOT ruin the story line for anyone interested in playing this game.
You start the game as the son of a General, Teo McDohl (you get to name your character). Being his son, he wants you to become part of the Imperial Army. You meet with the emperor, and he tells you to talk to someone and pick up a task. Teo goes with you to talk to this guy in the palace, you get your trivial task, and then go home. The next morning you start your task without your father, but you do travel with a party of friend (Cleo, Gremio, Pahn,Ted). This is where the story of Suikoden starts. Now, the plot will no longer be talked about.
There are actually a total of 108 characters that you can get to be in your party all over the world. It is not necessary to acquire all the characters, but if you do, there will be a twist in the plot. I have beaten it with and without getting all the characters, and I think that the twist kind of ruined the plot a little.
The graphics are typical of a PS1 game, nothing all that special. I like how the game is laid out display wise though. It is easy to navigate around, and everything is very easy to see.
Weapons in this game are rather creative. You can't buy weapons, but you can have them strengthened. Most towns have a blacksmith that can level your weapon up to a certain level, depending on their skill. The first town gets your weapon up to level 5, the second level 8, and so on. Although you can't buy weapons, you can buy armor and other items.
Walking around in this game is slow, unless of course you have Stallion in your party. Stallion is apparently the fastest person in the world, and when you get him in your party, you can finally begin to run. He must be one of the 6 members in your active party to do this. He is a pretty good fighter, so I suggest you level him up and keep him in there, it is well worth it.
The fighting system is turn-based, and attack order is based on speed attributes of the character. Since the party is 6 members, there are three in the front and three in the back. Those that throw arrows can attack from the back row, so keep them back there and your sword characters in the front.
I'm aware that this is a very basic review. It is hard to write more into detail without ruining the plot. I hope this was helpful. You can message me with questions about it if you want more details. Overall though, this is a great game and a must have
Summary: The best PS1 RPG
