Advantages: Controls are easy to use and gameplay is great
Disadvantages: None
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater came out in 1999 and I bought the game for my playstation not long after and have to say it's highly addictive and great fun whether you playing on your own or with a group of mates. A skateboarding game is such a simple concept in itself and yet the game has so much appeal.
This particular game features over ten different professional skaters, ranging from Tony Hawk himself to Elissa Steamer who is the only female skater in the game. Every skater comes with their own distinct skills. Tony for example is a skater who excels in half-pipe moves.
There are three different modes you can select from as you play. There is free skate, single session and career mode. Free skate is exactly what it sounds like, and that is that you just go around on any level that is unlocked and pull off tricks and do whatever you want. It is great to practise on this mode until you have mastered the controls fully. This is where you'll get the taste for the skating and the moves you can peform before you launch into the rest of the game head on.
The single session mode is a one-level version of the career mode. You have a two minute limit to rack up as many points as possible with your skating. Again this mode is great for learning the basics in a new area that has been unlocked.
Career is the main core of this game. You will at first have only one level to skate on, but then as you get points or acheive certain goals you will unlock more and more levels. Also, you are able to unlock secret characters as well.
There are in addition as well, a couple of competitions to take part in. You will run three heats against the professionals and get scored on how you do. The more original you are the more chance you have basically. The better scores will be attained by more combos, tricks and such like. You will have to finish in the top three to move to the next level.
None of the levels are the same which is great as adds to the interest and replay value of the game. Some of them are great fun to play as you try out different cities.
The gameplay and controls are simple enough, but there so much more depth to this game than initially meets the eyes. There are so many ways to execute moves and you will spend hours scoping out a level to see what other crazy tricks you can perform.
This is a great game and the graphics and soundtrack do not let it down either. Highly recommended and I reckon you can get this cheaply now as well.
Summary: Highly addictive and fun
