Advantages: as many levels as you have CDs, great party game

Disadvantages: graphics

Vib Ribbon, some may complain, has poor graphics. This is irrelevant.

Vib Ribbon is a game where you control Vibri the rabbit, as she skips along her line. The controlling you do is telling her how to avoid obstacles that get in her way along the route. There are four obstacles that she has to avoid and they are a square, a hole, a jagged ditch and a loop. The four obstacles means you need four buttons to control the game, down, X, L1and R1. You have to press the right button just as she gets to the obstacle or she avoids it wrongly. If you avoid to many obstacles wrongly she will de-evolve into a frog, and then a worm. If you do well she will turn into Super-Vibri. Your state of evolution affects how well you can control the game, and if you do really badly Vibri will die and you lose the level. At the end of the level you are given a score based on how many tricks you did.

Here’s where it gets interesting, there aren’t actually four shapes to avoid. There are ten, as you can also get combinations of two different shapes, like a jagged loop or a square with a hole in it. To avoid these you must press two buttons at once. You can also get moving shapes, travelling along the line towards or away from you. This makes timing hard.

Here’s where it gets more interesting, the line and its obstacles are based on music, which is played to you as you do the level. There are only three songs in the game so it may sound like a short game. But as I said, the levels are based on the music and this means that you can put in your own music CDs and the game will make a new level based on the track you choose on your CD. This means you can vary the difficulty greatly and using a slow classical CD will give you an easy level but a fast techno CD will give you a very hard level. It also means the game has as many levels as you do CDs.

I recommend this game to anyone, and especially to anyone with a large CD colle
ction. This is a great party game as you can listen to you favourite CDs whilst taking it in turns to do the level, maybe competing for a high score.
