Way, way back in 1995 when the infant that was the Sony PlayStation had just emerged in the U.K, big name games were required to give it a chance of beating the already established Sega Saturn. Developers Namco quickly came up with the goods - Tekken and Ridge Racer arcade-ports were immediately popular, but perhaps it was the futuristic racer WipEout that played the biggest role in the early success of the console. Games are rarely cool in the public eye, but WipEout, and then a year later WipEout 2097, managed to find favour among hardcore and casual gamers alike. The futuristic, minimalist look of the games together with the fact that they featured what were ... Read the complete review

In a genre of gaming that is increasingly striving for realism, both in terms of control and appearance, the Wipeout series has always provided a refreshing change. Set in the future, the Wipeout games neatly circumvent the drive for realism, and involve you piloting hovering spacecraft over fast-paced, graphically rich tracks. Each new game in the series has added additional, well-implemented features, and Wipeout 3 is no exception. One of the main selling features of the Wipeout series of games has always been the thumping techno music that's accompanied it, and Wipeout 3 is no exception in this regard, featuring contributions by musicians including DJ Sasha, ... When the Playstation was first released years ago, WipeOut was there, showcasing the incredible new graphic power of the system. While not exactly lacking in the features department, the previous two WipeOut games didn't have an abundance of game modes. WipeOut 3 definitely improves upon that aspect, as it now includes the standard Single, Tournament, and Time Trial, as well as the additions of Challenges (weapons, time, and race), and the Eliminator, a marathon fight to the death. Challenges are a nice way to get away from monotonous races and focus in on specific goals, like finishing in the top 3, completion of a track in a certain amount of time, and the most ... This is a very polished, very stylish futuristic racing game. As with previous titles, you pilot a hovering craft type affair, and must race a number of increasingly difficult tracks, using a variety of powerups along the way. The control method can take some getting used to, but like the best games, better skill leads to more fun. The feeling of speed and control is awesome when you're at your best, and the thrill of a narrow win up there with the best racing titles. The weapons are fun to use, and the whole game oozes style. If you don't own either of the previous Wipeout titles, this certainly deserves a place in your collection. ... Read the complete review

The WipeOut series has been a very happy one. In fact, the original WipeOut was one the games that made owning a PlayStation popular. So, now that we've reached episode number 3, is it still as good as the original? Better, I would say. The graphics have been updated to high-res, so everything looks crisper and less blocky than WO2097. The music is also of the same standard, featuring songs from Orbital, DJ Sasha and the Chemical Brothers. The gameplay remains the same as ever: a futuristic race in which you pilot a craft capable of defying gravity (OK, so it hovers), but it's as enthralling as ever! The addition of a two-player mode also makes ... Read the complete review
