There is no doubt that the highly successful Wipeout series was one of the reasons why Playstation became the most popular games console on earth. Gamers and newcomers alike lapped up Wipeout's fantastic graphics and music, even if it wasn't very easy to play. Then came the magnificent Wipeout 2097, which improved upon the original in every way, with even better graphics and soundtrack, and now much easier to get the hang of. But then, Wipeout 3 arrived. Needless to say it outclasses both of them...

From the second you get your hands on Wipeout 3, you know you're onto something good. From the ingenious Wip3out logo to the futuristic disc and manual designs, everything about the exterior presentation is perfect. And that doesn't change after you load it up, either. The minimalist intro and title/menu screens are excellent, and it looks like a lot of effort has been put into creating this look, which is perfect for a game of this type. There are loads of different game modes and options, and I am pleased to see a 2 player split screen mode included.

Its all very well having snazzy presentation and a good prequel, but does Wipeout 3 deliver the goods in other areas as well? The answer is yes. Every single thing that made the other Wipeouts such a huge success has been improved upon. The graphics are absolutely amazing and would not look out of place on Playstation 2. I'm sure if you were to show this game to the original developers of the Playstation, they would be amazed. The amount of speed, smoothness, detail and effects are almost unparallelled by any other game of this genre. Its incredible just how much Psygnosis have managed to squeeze out of the little grey box.

The gameplay is compelling, addictive and great fun…. I heartily recommend this game to anyone…. But be warned, you’ll need to have a lot of time on your hands!
