Advantages: Familiar gameplay, added appeal for X-Men fans.

Disadvantages: Nothing new.

If you grew up with Tekken, there is nothing new that will leap out at you in this game. If you didn't, then you'll probably spend more time frustrated and trying to grasp the basics than you will playing.

This doesn't mean it's a bad game.

I'm actually a big fan - I grew up with fighter games like this one, and it's interesting to see it translated across to the world of X-Men. The gameplay might not be new, but the familiarity helps when you're trying to master new combos - each character's power can be unleashed through various button combos and power ups, just like special attacks in Tekken. These are all available from the moment you master them, none require you to reach a certain level of gameplay before use.

The training academy gives a chance to play around with these powers, get to know the controls, and master the combos needed to win. The arcade is simple, and again familiar, but the chance to unlock "special content" (various pictures from both comic and film, and new costumes) adds a little extra to it - not enough to justify the purchase on their own, but a definite bonus to go along with the gameplay elements.

Some of the attacks can be rather clunky, even when memorised, but with practice they become easier. As all the characters use the same button combinations for the same "style" of attacks (Low kick, high kick, low punch, high punch, and special attacks that throw the victim forwards and back) this can be irritating, but overcome with time.

Wolverine is almost a "cheat' character - almost unstoppable if he corners the other character, which gets boring after a while - though this might be considered accurate given his skills in the source material. (No accommodation is made for his healing skill - all characters lose health at the same rate.)

Overall, if you're looking for a decent fighter game, and like X-Men, I'd consider this worth buying. It has its flaws, but it's very enjoyable.

Summary: Worth buying if this is your thing.
