Game adaptations of films, predominantly, are pretty damn awful, but I just couldn't resist the temptation to give the game adaptation of the awesomely over-the-top film 300 a go. This was certainly a film ripe for a video game makeover, and despite the promise, they somehow make this a cack-handed game that's just not as fun or as bombastic as it should be.
This game is an odd one in as much as it really needs a meatier platform to truly display its potential, and on the oft-sluggish PSP, it just doesn't work (although with this poor level of development it would've floundered on even the PS3!). The plot revolves around the very real Battle of Thermopylae, where a small gang of 300 Spartans attempt to repel a strong Persian army of many thousands. You control the Spartan leader, King Leonidas, attempting to take down Xerxes and his army, and given the promise if it played out like a Dynasty Warriors scenario, this could have been fun, but it's just not.
The gameplay is fairly routine button bashing fare, and there's really not much to it, which isn't so much the problem, as is technical limitations imposed by the PSP that make the game not really able to do much. The greatest bit of originality we get is being able to create a Phalanx, which is a nice touch as it's ripped straight out of the game. For the most part, though, this is stunted by the PSP's lean specs.
Visually, this is pretty ropey looking, and on the PSP, you'll get frequent frame-rate drops due to the number of artefacts on the screen. Also, the models throughout look very bad, and the enemies are immensely generic. Aurally, it fares better; the game has decent voice acting, and the grunting and smashing of weapons all adds to the experience. The background music doesn't use a lot of Tyler Bates's score, though, which is disappointing.
There's not enough here to keep you coming back for more, and I guarantee that you'll be bored after a short while, even if you're a fan of the game like me.
I borrowed this game off a mate and I am glad I did. The game is like most other movie games, completly rubbish. Everything about the game, from graphics to gameplay is rubbish. The game gets very repetitive and runs out of ideas after the first hour or two of playing.
The graphics are very bad for the PSP system. The game has lots of slowdown and doesn't run smooth at all. The controls are very hard to learn. Most gamers, will find this complicated and give up. They also don't register straight away meaning you may die in fights. However, the soundtrack is great and compliments to game very well.
The game follows the 300 movie and follows the different scenes from that.
The gameplay is very boring and it runs out of ideas after the first couple of levels. The game has definately suffered from rushed development. It is very repetitive with many actions and gameplay the last just in different areas.
There is no 2 player or online mode.
The game might be ok for hardcore fans of the movie but everybody else should avoid it as it has many problems from graphics to gameplay.
