Advantages: Graphically impressive, can play anywhere and everywhere, unique moves for each character
Disadvantages: The story is very repetitive, the two player kind of sucks compared to the console versions
For the first time ever, Dragonball Z makes its way to the Playstation Portable (PSP), known as Dragonball Z Shin Budokai, created by the creators of the original Dragaonball Z Budokai series on the PS2, Dimps. Challenge yourself through numerous fierce fights in the Dragonball Z universe with over 10 playable characters, including the first time ever to play as the Namek, Pikkon.
There are five modes you can play in Dragonball Z Shin Budokai, including Story mode, Arcade Mode and Z Trial. The story mode follows through a fictitious land in the Dragonball Z universe which is also loosely based on the Dragonball Z movie: Fusion Reborn, where characters from the past and future are all warped into one world, where many familiar villains will appear for you to face, with classic RPG texts before and after battles explaining what's going on, or just for comic relief.
Arcade mode, allows you to fight through battles at your own pace, without any story backed onto you. You can freely choose your character, and fight many, many foes, from villains to heroes. The other modes are also fun for you to explore, such as Z trial, which offers its unique small outside story, where you fight through specific set-out battles depending on which character you choose.
Dragonball Z Shin Budokai also offers two player wireless mode, which allows you and a friend to fight against each other, one on one, to see who the ultimate warrior in the universe really is. I found the game rather enjoyable, though for it being a PSP game, it was pretty fun, though I do prefer the Dragonball Z games on the PS2 and other proper consoles due to the more variety of characters, the less repetitive story, and being able to play with your friends without needing two games and two PSPs.
I found the game rather addictive, being a big fan of Dragonball Z, and recently purchasing a PSP at the time I got this game, it was very good to be able to play Dragonball Z anywhere in the house, or out and about, which defiantly makes this game more addictive then others. The game is original, as it is loosely based off of the Dragonball Z movie: Fusion Reborn, but mainly fictional with the warping of the characters in a fictional land, makes this a unique Dragonball Z experience.
Graphically, the game is pretty impressive, as normal with most PSP games, with the small screen, games look extremely smooth and rather decent, quite a marvel to look at the great character design and the pretty good battlefields. The soundtrack is okay, but never have been really too appealed to the soundtracks of Dragonball Z games after Budokai 3. The sound effects are great also with much detail. I didn't find the game very difficult until it got near the end, where some battles just get near impossible to beat, where you'll need much skill and competence with how the game works and be quick with your actions. You can find this game for around £10-£15, which is pretty good price for a good fighting game which you can play anywhere. In short, this game is great for Dragonball Z fans, and anyone that's after a good fighting game for the PSP, one of the best out to date.
Overall: 7.4/10
Summary: A good fighter for the PSP, but best to stick with the console versions
