Advantages: Unique Gameplay. Long Lasting. Very Entertaining. Level Creator.
Disadvantages: Can Get Very Tricky. No Multiplayer Option.
Lemmings is a classic Puzzle game that has been around years having been first published by Psygnosis in 1991. It was orginally developed for the Amiga 500. Lemmings was very popular upon it's orgiginal release, receiving rave reviews for it's gameplay & originality.
The way in which you play Lemmings is one Level at a time. The objective is to get as many Lemmings as possible through the level alive. The Lemmings walk aimlessly across the screen from side to side until they hit an object, die or escape the level to freedom. You do not control the Lemmings directly with your joypad. What you do is assign a skill to a Lemming & then the same Lemming carries it out. Different skills include blocking other Lemmings progress. Building Stairs or Digging Tunnels. You then use the different skills of different Lemmings to plot a safe route from the entry point to the exit point. Yous score will depend on the number of Lemmings safely gotten across the finish line.
As with all Puzzle games, graphics & sounds are not the most important part of the picture & they also tend to be just as playable ten years after release as they were on the first day. The Graphics & Sounds on the PSP version are good & more than adequate. There are over 100 levels to play through. They vary by difficulty & provide both a deep challenge & a good learning curve. Add on to that a level designer & the ability to download new levels for free online & you have a game that can last ages.
There aren't many downsides. It is a puzzle game & should be avoided if you don't like them. There is a two player mode of any kind on this game. Which is even more of a shame when you consider that there WAS a 2 player game on the Amiga 500!.
Over all a very good & entertaining game for the solo player. Load of levels to work through & with the downloadable ones, this will keep you going for a very long time. I recommend giving it a go.
