Lumines - highly addictive puzzle game
Member Name: Dangey2009
Advantages: Highly addictive and fun
Disadvantages: Highly addictive - can be hooked for hours
When the PSP was orginally launched a few years back this game 'Lumines' was released the same day as the launch and is another puzzle game. I find that there alot of puzzle games out there and I find them very irritating as they are too difficult but I wanted to see what this one was all about anyway and give me something to do.
Lumines is a bit like the classic game of 'Tetris' which was brought along time ago now but has always been a firm favourite even to this day. This game deals with blocks that fall from the top of the screen as well. However there is a difference. Instead of the blocks being different shapes as in Tetris, the blocks are made up of 2 colours. You need to have just one of two colours of blocks be matched in a square shape, then when a square is made the square of colour will disappear. The more squares of the same colour that you can make the more points that you get. Therefore the concept is very simple as are the controls, but highly addictive.
The pieces that fall from the top of the screen are always squares and unlike games like Tetris the blocks will fit into any area without gaps.
The game sounds simple enough but like with most puzzle games there is a twist. Every now and then in the game a square will drop that has a little green jewel in the middle of it. If you are able to use this jewel, every block that is the same color of the block that has the jewel in it when connected by direct touch will be included in your combination.
Also the music in the game plays a bit part as well, because a music bar sweeps across the screen in time with the speed of the music playing. You combinations will be counted and cleared only when the bar passes over the cubes you have made. Therefore a slower piece of music will be very different to a faster piece as the bar moves at different speeds.
Lumines as with most puzzle games looks very simple and there are no great graphics as there don't need to be. You can select different backgrounds for the game when you're playing it and more can be unlocked as you progress through the game.
Overall the game is simple idea but vey addictive. It will keep you hooked for hours trying to constantly better your high score. I recommend this if you like puzzle games.
Summary: Great puzzle game fun with a twist
