There are plenty of other sporting games on the PSP but this is the first American Football game I've tried on it and although there are now more recent versions this one was very enjoyable and a good effort from the developers. I love the real game so thought I'd give this a try as an alternative to the endless soccer games I play. The menu is a bit slow and there is a lot on there. However, if you can take a bit of menu loading at the start, then I found this to be an extremely good PSP game on the market.
This 3D football game for the handheld device has available to it all the basic gameplay options and also offensive and defensive move controls. Add to this pretty precise passsing with accuaracy, although if you push the analog stick too far in one direction or another the pass will overshoot the receiver by quite a margin. That perhaps is the only problem in this game that the analog stick is too sensitive and that is also the case when you get your running game going.
That aside the passing in this game has a great feel to it and is very smooth. The graphics are not bad either as you play in nfl matches. You can make managerial decisions in this game like signing free agents, drafting in rookies and trading players. The ultimate aim in the game is of course to take your team all the way to the Super Bowl.
Madden 06 on the PSP also includes the minicamp mode, which comes along with a number of new minicamp games. Some of these new minicamp games are fantastic, including a route-running game for wide receivers and tight ends, a coverage game for defensive backs, a blocking one for offensive linemen, a quarterback-sacking one for any defensive player, and even one for kick and punt returners.
As the first simulation american football game on the PSP, Madden 06 gets a recommendation from me. It's got its problems and the menu loading is very slow at times, but the gameplay is great and will keep you entertained.
I have had this game for a while, so please be aware that there are 07, 08, 09 & 2010 versions of this game all available. Some of which might well possibly be better.
This game is made by EA sports & is the main & best American Football Franchise available on game consoles. This is the 06 version which was release in 2005 & one of the first versions on the PSP.
All the teams from the National Football League are present & correct with complete rosters & coach details. These were correct at the time although as with any sport, players move around, so the rosters are now innacurate. Some teams look more current than others because they have had less changes.
There are quite a ferw game modes available. These include quick game, season, franchise (where you manage the team & can trade players) & multiplayer. Multiplayer works much better on a handheld if you are playing against a human opponent as neither of you can see which plays you are going for.
The game is fun to play. It is easy to control & get to grips with although it does help if you know the rules of American Football. There is the option to have "Pass Assist" on. This makes passing a lot easier. The difficulty does progress well too. On easy with pass assist you will hammer everyone. On difficult without pass assist, you'll do really well to score 20 points in a game. The graphics are also pretty good too for a PSP game.
On the downside, there isn't the option to play online or the option to completely create your own team with name & colour scheme. These don't make the game any less fun to play but they are always good extras.
I would recommend the game. If you like American Football I don't think you'll be dissapointed. Die Hard fans might well want to go for one of the newer games although as this is 4 years old, you can obviously pick up a cheap copy. Especially good for people who want to give it a try but don't want to spend much. I have deducted 1 star for it's age & would have given it 4 if rosters were current.
After playing the game for a number of months i can tell you that it has very good gameplay and is easy to pick up. Not being much of an American Football fan i was unsure if i would enjoy the game when buyin it however, once played i discovered that it easy to pick up (after just an hour or so i understood the rules etc) and for those who may not be able to pick it up as quick there is also help for every situation which makes it a lot easier.
At times the game is slow to load although it does have very good graphics for a psp game and so i accepted the slower loading times. It can also be boring at times waiting for the other team to make the snap if they are trying to waste time on the clock. Also, the mini games and training modes on the game make it alot more interesting when you get fed up of playing game after game of American football.
Overall the game is very easy to pick up and play even if you are not an American football fan. The game play and graphics are good and there are many teams to choose from. On the negative side the loading times can be a little annoying at times and John Maddens voice does get a little annoying after a while.
It is definently a game that is worth buying.
Madden NFL 06 of the PSP is a American football sports and is made by Electronic Arts and was released in 2005. The game is one in the series and in the United States is a best seller, with American Football not being as big in the United Kingdom it is not as big but still sells well.
As with all the other games in this series John Madden does the main commentary, and as usual is very good but at times not very interesting. There is also a pretty decent soundtrack as well.
As with all similar games you select your team, decide who to play and play through seasons trying to win the league, buying and selling players, organising training with little mini games you also have the opportunity to create your own players.
The controls are fairly easy to use and learn, although some of the harder moves are quite hard to do quickly but the basic player will not use them, the graphics are pretty good and detailed and the game runs smoothly.
This game for me is quite hard with this not being my main game type to play, the easy mode is pretty easy but the harder levels are too hard for me.
The game has multiplayer options, but I have not played it multiplayer.
Value for Money
With plenty of teams to choose from to play and the chance to create your own players there is lots of choices and the game is pretty addictive at times and fun to play, so you can easily go back to it.
My rating 6 out of 10
