Miami Vice: The Game is a third-person shooter game for the Playstation Portable developed by Rebellion Developments in 2006. It is a tie-in with the film of the same name - which was itself based on the 80s series - and follows roughly the same storyline. The series, the film and the game revolve around two police detectives working undercover in Miami, named Crockett and Tubbs, who combat drug trafficking, prostitution and other crimes in the area. The show was quite light-hearted, but the film directed by Michael Mann gave it a much darker, more stylish feel.
The plot of the game, which is simplified version of the film plot is as follows. Crockett and Tubbs, who you play as alternately, have to bring down a South American drug lord known as Sacrenegra, since the local authorities cannot link him to his criminal activities. Crockett and Tubbs have to go deeper and deeper into Miami drug empire in order to bring down Sacrenegra and stop his illegal activity, whether by foot, by car or by boat. Unlike the film, I found the plot of the PSP game to be a little weak and oversimplified, yet it still kept my interest. However, for me he appeal of the game was not with the plot but with the gameplay itself. The gun battles are exciting, with some original features which make it stand out from many other shooter games such as laser sights on your guns and a cover system. The vehicle chases are equally exciting, and the boat chase is something you rarely see in games and is a very fun feature. The graphics are pretty good with a fair amount on intricate detail and well-designed levels, and the sound quality is also good, with the classic Miami Vice theme featuring throughout. There are a wide variety of weapons and locations in the game including a cargo ship, a mansion and a nightclub. The game really captures the stylish feel of the film, and also captures the retro appeal of the TV series, so fans of both will not be disappointed.
The gameplay itself is a little limited, and the game is quite short but these do not hugely detract from the excitement and enjoyment of the game. It is certainly an entertaining game and I recommend it to anyone who has not yet played it.
Summary: An entertaining movie tie-in but slightly let down by some minor things
