Advantages: Cool Ideas, Lots Of Missions, Pick Up And Play
Disadvantages: Difficulty, Handling
Developed by Bigbig Studios for the PSP, Pursuit Force puts you right into the thick of the action from the first level. The game centres around an agent who joins a police agency called 'Pursuit Force', their mission being to take on the weapon toting enemy gangs in Capital State.
And let's get one thing straight before we get into this review. This game is DIFFICULT. There's no gentle buildup. When I said you're thrown into the action, you really are. You're pitted against five gangs through which vehicle crime in the city has increased, and you being part of a new setup called Pursuit Force, are to deal with these criminals. It's this setup which leads to some interesting (and pretty fun) moves.
If you've wanted to jump across cars in slow motion to stop bad guys, this game is for you. It's over dramatic, but it works. You can latch onto their vehicles and deal out swift justice, using your newly commandeered acquisition to chase down more bad guys and repeat the process while dodging between traffic and keeping yourself alive under some dangerous driving and hails of gunfire.
This is where we run into a small gripe. The handing on the cars feels pretty sluggish at times which is especially important at high speed. In order to actually jump from vehicle to vehicle, you need to be able to reach there in one piece. It can be pretty frustrating if you've progressed into the level and die because of poor handling but it's one of those things you just get the hang of.
It's a rewarding experience, and should you manage to beat all those levels, and you -will- feel like you should be rewarded with something. The pick up and play nature of the PSP is perfect for it. Should you get stuck on a mission, the ability to turn it off to cool down and then start it back up again with relative ease and quick loading is a godsend. Overall, it's a pretty impressive title with a few original ideas and it's been executed well for the PSP. 4 stars.
Summary: If difficulty isn't your thing, rent it.
