Much like the PS2 version of Smackdown vs Raw 2008, this PSP iteration is a fun but ultimately flawed title that isn't by any means a nadir for the series, but it's hardly its greatest moment either.
Visually, it's hardly a game to show off the PSP, and indeed, THQ's wrestling games, whatever their platform, always seem quite behind the times visually, and this is no different. The wrestler models look decent although not exactly advanced, while the arenas are well modelled, but the crowds, in this day and age, still look absolutely horrendous. Aurally, though, the game is as good as ever; the menu music is hard hitting and will get you pumped up for the fight, while the commentary is mostly decent even if it occasionally isn't relevant to the fighting in the ring!
The first thing hardcore fans will notice is how the controls have been altered; everything has been swapped around, and although the new scheme works well, I have to ask whether we really needed the fuss of learning a whole new control scheme when the other one worked well enough? Gameplay-wise, it's not as good as the other PSP SvR games, and Season Mode has been replaced with a less entertaining 24/7 Mode, which is quite limited and lacks any proper storylines. The favourite game modes are still in there, though, thankfully, but this reeks of a game that has been lazily churned out for a quick buck. Even with the addition of ECW, this still feels quite lean.
This is a rather flawed game, and whatever platform you play it on, it is a let down, but it's still fun enough and fans of the series will probably enjoy it.
I picked up this game as I wanted some wrestling action on the go. The game has some new features from last years installment but still has some problems that will put some people off.
The game include the Smackdown and RAW WWEs shows and also has the new ECW with the addition of the EWC rules match. In this mode you can do anything you want, weapons are even hidden under the ring. There are plenty of venues and people to use. The online is good but contains lots of lag and no players.
The graphics are ok but not the best I have seen on the PSP system. However, they don't harm the gaming experience. The game has no slowdown and runs very smooth.
The gameplay is very fun but has some issues. The loading times are very long and you will be bored by the time one match has even loaded. The game is very out of date with some new superstars missing and some even with the wrong companies.
The game is very similar to last years and nothing new has been added so if you are new to the series, it is worth a purchase.
Overall, it is great but similar to last years and has some issues.
WWE smack down vs. raw 2008 is a great game that is almost identical to the PS2 and 3 version but with less wrestlers to choose from.
The game has a wide range of creation modes allowing you to create wrestlers, move sets, entrances and other stuff for use in the ring.
Fighting is easy, the square button and a arrow button will punch, and the circle button with arrow button will graple. You can then choose how much presure and pain you want to give the opponent by using the analouge stick.
Game modes are simple, there is a quick match option and mayn other match types such as Extreme rules (the ref wont do anything) and first blood (first to make the opponent bleed wins)
The other main mode has you controling either a wrestler or a manager as they go through their daily lives, This means things like training and doing events like movies and photoshoots. This might be fun at first but after a few weeks becomes boring and not being able to save mulitiple files means you if you choose to be a wrestler you will not get the chance to be a manager unless you start again.
I first got the psp as a chritsmas present and didnt no what to expect from it. This game was one of the games i was given with the psp. I was very very impressed with the overall system and the game itself is world class. I thought it might be a bit like the old gameboys and things but i was very shocked to see that it is nothing of the like. This game is very simlier to the one of the ps2 and the wii which i have tried it on both. The psp verison has all the same features and the graphics are fantasic. The gameplay is great it isnit slow like many other systems and it is a game you can realy get into. Everything about this game is top notch and is very worth a 5 star rating from me. THQ must have realy put some effort into making this game as it realy does stand up to any of the home based systems. just under 30 quid is worth it for anyone who has one of these systems. The only thing we can hope for now from thq is they bring the next years verison of this game out on the psp and that it has the same features.
story mode is amazing and changes all the time. i have yet to compelte it all as of yet.
a defo get game for every wrestling fan and even if you are not a wrestling fan it is worth getting as the game play is realy that good.
10 out of 10 for me on this game and a full star rating to go with it.
Class game. Must get, dont no what else i can say to make you buy it lol worth a look.
This is a game that is really fun, on the go or if you have nothing else to do. This can be fun for non wrestling fans just like i am. The most fun thing about this game i think is all the different match types in the game. Stuff like Hell in a cell, Elimination chamber, TLC, Tables, hardcore, tag team, single, and my favorite ECW extreme rules, and more. The Extreme rules is just fun to take out your anger with because you can just pound and beat guys until their bloodied with many, many weapons. It is awesome to light tables on fire and put people through them. This has a lot of characters to choose from, but the coolest thing is the create a wrestler where you can basically create anything you want the possibilities are just endless there is so much stuff. I love this game to take on the go and play once in a while but it get boring when you play more than 20 or 30 minutes. Overall this is a good game but needs more attention on the story line. This game is forcing me to try Smackdown 09, 07, and 06.
Smackdown vs Raw 2008 is the latest edition of the WWE's annual video game. For anyone who isn't familiar with the title, it's a wrestling game with uses unique grapple-systems and strikes which could be enough to secure it in the "Beat-Em-up" bracket. This year the added element was the introduction of WWEs latest TV show ECW. With the involvement of ECW cames the "ECW rules" match. This is essentially an anything goes match with weapons hidden under the ring which you can choose for yourself. Other than this addition the game has had a roster update. As usual it's still out of date as by the time of release several Superstars have either left the company, or newer Superstars had risen to prominence before the publishers had time to write them into the game. The story-mode this year is called WWE-24/7, this is pretty much the same as the story modes in previous WWE games where you pick one superstar, build him up from the lower mid card. Try to win the Royal Rumble, Headline Wrestlemania and become the WWE Champion. It's a tried and tested formula that I can't complain at, as along the way theres many items to unlock to keep you interested. The graphics are pretty stunning and the effort put into the entrance seens are great. But with all this comes horrendous loading times. This is actually off putting when it comes to the storymode. The loading is so slow you'd sometimes rather just give up. Overall I'd say it's a solid and fun wrestling game but hampered by the slow loading and how dated the roster has become since it's release.
WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2008 will let players take the fight into their own hands with the debut of Superstar Fighting Styles. The game features eight unique styles, each having its own strategy and exclusive attributes. A brand new Struggle Submission System will give players intuitive and natural control over their WWE Superstars by using the gameÔÇÖs popular analog controls. Realism and strategy are at the forefront, as players will now control the amount of pressure they apply to their opponents. In addition, WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2008 will feature a significant Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW) presence, including a variety of Superstars, arenas and weapons.
