Advantages: Graphics, some good ideas
Disadvantages: Rubber band gameplay SUCKS
Sonic Rivals is a game I desperately wanted to like, for it has a few good ideas, but is ultimately sullied by its more lazy gameplay elements, making for a frustrating, not too enjoyable experience. Sonic Rivals is a racing game, with you and another player racing through a map, being able to attack one another, and whoever reaches the end of the stage first wins. While this in of itself isn't so bad, it's never given a chance to truly breathe due to the limited gameplay.
Being quite an avid racing game player, I HATE rubber band mechanics, and this game is packed with it. Basically, it means that whoever is in last place will be given a boost to catch up to first, somewhat nullifying the point of making any effort until the final moments of the race, at which point you'll often be overtaken by your opponent due to the dumb rubber-band mechanics. This sort of gameplay takes the entire premise of gaming, guts it and leaves it for dead.
Visually, though, the game looks good; Sonic and his cohorts are well rendered, and the environments have solid texture work, while some of the elemental effects from the Specials are especially good looking. However, the game suffers in the audio department, with the soundtrack consisting of rudimentary, totally forgettable beats that have clearly been done on the cheap.
Though the idea has promise, the execution is fatally flawed, making for a disappointing and often infuriating game that doesn't reward skill, and in fact goes entirely the other way by rewarding mediocrity with a boost! It's a shame as there were some good racing mechanics here, but they are ruined by this irksome feature.
Summary: Ruined by one main flaw
