Advantages: New weapon system, story mode is better, graphics and gameplay are great
Disadvantages: Questionable longevity
Star wars battlefront : Renegade Squadron is the latest in the battlefront line. I have owned it now for a month but I still have a good experience of it as I have become addicted to it. I am sure that many readers of this review are considering buying the game as they have played previous versions, but can it meet expectations?
The controls are different here due to the fact that the psp does not own as many buttons as a normal ps2 or 3 controller. The main difference is that instead of aiming like you would do if you had a right analog stick, players simply hold R to lock on. Other than that there are not any other changes, these controls take some time to getting used to, but once you have they are great and easy to use.
The graphics are average for a psp game, which is not bad. They seem to be around the level of the original star wars battlefront for the ps2. They are quite sharp and the colours all seem to be fine.
There are a few different game modes in regenade squadron. These are galactic conquest, story mode, single battle and online play. Galactic conquest is pretty simple, all you have to do is capture different planets in a risk board game like format, but instead of rolling dice to see who wins a planet actually fighting a battle for it. Story mode has now been changed now to have objectives that must be completed, this is all down controlling the rebels. Single battle speaks for itself. And finally online mode is great fun, you can either play friends locally or over the internet if you are within range of a wifi network, it's great to play, but very hard. Oddly in single battle you can fight in the clone wars as battle droids, but strangely there is no option for this in galactic conquest which is a shame.
There is now an option to buy your weapons in this game. At the start of each battle, your soldier is given 100 credits. They can then choose their own mix of weapons. This is a great new feature meaning options are no longer restricted. In previous battlefront games I enjoyed having a jetpack to take bases quickly, but if an opponent came I struggled to do anything as I had a rocket launcher, with this new system I can own both a jetpack and a machine gun, which is great.
The only disadvantage I can think of is the questionable longevity of the game. Once you have done the story mode and galactic conquest mode there is not much else to be done. To make the game last longer you can change the difficulty to make it more challenging. But other than that there is not much else to be done.
Overall I think that this is a must have game for the psp. It's great fun and ticks all the right boxes in the battlefront saga, it makes a great addition to the collection.
Summary: A must have for all star wars and psp lovers
