World Poker Tour is an ideal game for an on the go medium like the PSP, that can be best seen when you compare the PS2 version of this game to it - the PS2 version was an average game that you would not spend much time on. This game however, I played far too much and its because you can literally just pick it up play for 2 minutes or for 2 hours.
As for the game itself, its the career mode that is the thing that makes you keep coming back. As you advance through the amateur and professional ranks to challenge the best poker players around, its hard to put down.
The gameplay is of a good standard although computer players have a habit of folding if you raise it right up. However, you won't be able to wipe the opposition out too quickly no matter how good you are. The more interesting part is the tournaments that involve many players from different tables. This way you remain challenged, even if you are used to dominating your table, as once a couple of players drop out you will have to face players with much more chips than you.
On the downside I would say that there should have been more of a 'fanfare' when you actually win the competition, but this isn't much of a complaint.
I love poker and having reviewed the games that were available for the PSP opted for this one, World Poker Tour.
I've played quite a lot of poker online over the last few years, starting off playing sit n gos before moving onto cash games, just at low limits I might add. Not having played a poker game before, other than against other real people (online or against friends at home) I wasn't really sure what to expect really from this game. I thought anything that allowed me to play poker on the go, was worth trying and I thought it might even help me find holes in my game.
Well, first impressions were the graphics were OK but nothing great. I created my own player character to take on the poker tour, which took about 5 minutes, as the options were quite limited. You start with a small pot of money and the idea is obviously to win as much as possible, with the end goal winning the WPT. You choose which tournaments to play in, each with varying levels of buy-in. I suppose the higher the tournament buy-in the more difficult the game's supposed to be.
So I started playing tournaments against various random players at different levels of buy-ins. For those who play poker, you'll know that you don't just play the cards but the players too. One of the issues with this game, is that there just didn't seem to be any way of telling how any of your opponents actually played - e.g.; tight, loose, passive or aggressive - as their cards and actions appeared to be all too random. When I did get the money in, I found that I mostly had the best hand but then would be outdrawn.
However, the biggest issue I have with this game, is that you have to wait for what seems like an eternity for your opponents to decide what they're going to do. I think this is perhaps because I'm not used to waiting when playing online. Online there's a strict time limit, players are generally quick to respond plus I often play multiple tables at once so there's always lots of action. In this game, there's a option to skip the hand if you much your cards pre-flop, or at any time during the hand which is good but the game is still way too slow for me. This is the main reason why I haven't played this game hardly at all despite my love for poker. So, I might well have underestimated the artificial intelligence capabilities of the game itself because I haven't played it enough.
I tried going online once but that seemed like a complete waste of time because there wasn't anyone there to play against!
For those players who are used to playing online like me, I'd steer clear of this game as you'll just end up bored and frustrated. Save your money or better still, use it to play a real game online where, even if you go all in on your first hand and lose, will be a more memorable and enjoyable experience than this playing this game!
World Poker Tour is one of the many Poker video games around. Thsi si why you should consider buying it.
You start the game by designing yourself. Picking what your player will look like. What his or her name will be. How they will dress. Even what accessories they will wear like sunglasses.
There are different play options for solo play. You can select to quickly play a tournament or you can set off on a career mode. Plus, there are loads of different variations of Poker on here from the more common place Texas Hold 'Em or 5 Card Draw to Omaha, Tahoe and Shan.
Where this game really excels is the online play mode. Turn on your WLAN switch on the PSP, select the multiplayer option & you'll be transported to the online play section. Here you can join any open table, or set up a table of your own with your own rules & play against real people over the Net without loosing all your real money! This works really well. Doesn't suffer from any slowdown & whats more, PS2 players & PSP players use the same servers & code & can play against each other. Not many games can say that.
I would recommend this game to anyone wanting a good Poker Game for their PSP or for anyone wanting to learn the game. You can pick up a copy of this quite cheaply & if you are into Poker, in my opinion you will get your money's worth.
A fantastic on-the-go game, can just be picked up and played for any length of time and put down again, such is the way poker is. This game is very addictive, play your way to the top against all the best poker players. There are many quality features and game modes that lead to hours and hours of thrilling gameplay.
This game can be picked up very cheaply and yet provides so much entertainment, if you love poker like I do, you'll find yourself playing it all the time. It comes in handy on those long car, coach and train journeys - as long as you're no the one driving!
Learn betting patterns, learn how to bluff and steal the biggest pots from the best players. This game has everything a poker player wants and does portray a realistic view of how some of the top players take to the tables.
Fully recommended, poker lover or not.
World Poker Tour was a game I spotted in my local game store and I decided to pick this up as I thought it would be fantastic as it was ideal for my travel to and from work as poker is a game which would be able to be played for short times without detracting from the game itself. The game of poker is one that has recently become a global success and so has seen many poker games released on the consoles but World Poker Tour is one of the leaders in the genre as it has so many fantastic features including the ability to spend your earnings to purchase new accessories for your character. The game offers fantastic looking players , has amazing commentary from greats like Mike Sexton and Vince Van Patten, has many of the real world poker tour venues as well as competitors and matched the fabulous gameplay this game is winner all around.
If you want a game for your PSP that you can pickup and play as you would play the real game then this is the one for you.
World Poker Tour is one of the best PSP games I own. Possibly a biased opinion due to the fact I am a big poker fan, but even so, this game is excellent for learning somebody the basics, expanding your knowledge, or building up confidence and practicing without the need to risk lots of money in the process.
This very fun game allows you to have quick practice games, or create your very own character, which can enter a kind of continuous tournament which follows as the games 'storyline' so to speak. The in game time generates a new tournament every week, with the option to buy in for big money, or to play one or two sattelites for a significantly reduced fee. After each round, there is an overall leaderboard which displays your current standings in the ranks of the top game players, by ranking in order of money won in the tournaments.
A very well created game that gives hours of fun and keeps you entertained for days !
