Advantages: Stunning battery life, stylish looks, ATRAC compatable

Disadvantages: Awful software

This CD player was a constant companion of mine until about two years ago when I bought an mp3 player. It kept me going for many a bus journey. The battery life is probably its most outstanding feature. On a full charge and playing Atrac CDs it runs for 150 hours (stated by Sony) which equates to about a week or two being used during the day for commuting or running.

The sound output is of Sony's infallible high calibre and more than necessary for most people. The styling and build quality is stunning. The sleek uninterrupted appearance is fantastic and although the controls have all been placed on the edge there is no compromise. If anything, it makes them easier to access and manipulate from inside a pocket.

The ATRAC music format system is impressive to say the least. Thirty CDs worth of music saved onto one CD with no noticeable loss of quality. Where this system falls down is the software you need to burn these CDs. It is appalling. Sony, with all their expertise in electronic products has proved themself incapable of writing a useable piece of software. Admittedly it does the job but it is awkward. It is slow and cumbersome and has an interface that requires more than a little getting used to.

The CD player has the best anti-skip mechanism I have ever seen that rivals a flash mp3 player. It just doesn't skip. I have tried and failed on several occasions to see how great a force it could withstand. I never managed to make it skip. Its been dropped, banged and had things dropped on it. It's got slightly scratched but still wouldn't skip.

A little dated now maybe, but it's the perfect buy for someone who still wants to be able to play CD on the move.

Summary: A great music player for people who don't want to upgrade to an MP3 player.
