Sony Net MD Walkman MZ-N510/L
by martyedwards
This now look like ancient alien technology, but back in the day this was the craze, smaller and more compact than a tape player. know for its tiny disks which still to this day i think look pretty sweet. id prefer a CD player to play them over what the modern CD looks like, but i suppose there is reason why each of them are like they ... are and why CDs now rule the roost when it comes to the music industry.
Price and Availability
--------------------------
Finding these in shops now would be virtually impossible, however if you go online to eBay or amazon im sure you would be able to scout one out of there. They aint badly priced. if you are to go online in the next couple of days mine will be selling on there with alot of mini disks with it at a bargain price so its worth a look haha.
If your one of these people that cannot be bothered with the chew on of the modern day technology then this can be found at a cheap price online and they aint to hard to find one which is in decent shape. For the older generation more than the young however because you can now get ipods for fairly cheap aswell.
Appearance and Design.
-----------------------------------
The appearance of this crafty little device aint to bad, theirs a small screen which at times can be hard to understand what some of the abbreviated things mean. but you can quite simply get around and record and play the music that you want to. Each of the buttons are labeled so you can see what you need to press to make each of the certain areas to work, this can make a big difference when it comes down selecting a music device for me personally as i cannot be bothered with something that is going to cause much confusion and make the task of simply listening to music a task.
There is a range of colours from what i can remember when you first purchase one of these, i went for the silver option, however maybe not the best choice as the silver is only a coating on the top and it had signs of wear and tear on this item now and you can see the sections where the white has started to come through from beneath, but still no chunks or deep scratches on this device, suppose this shows that the device can handle wear and tear rather well as ive owned this for at least 5 years now and it still works.
Overall
----------
not a bad little music player for someone who doesn't want the hassle and chew on with new technology, the best way to put this would be to have a good time and easy simple technology that makes the most of the music that you want to listen to.
i would recommend this for people of the older generation cause it takes batteries so there's no need to carry on charging it when it goes flat, a simple change of rechargeable batteries (all old people have these) and your bobbing your head to the slash all over again. Sony MD Walkman MZ-R501

I bought this as my first minidisc player back in the day these were all the fashion and it has been the only one I have had apart from my mindisc 'seperates' unit. The player is very easy to use, i found the menus easy to navigate but I found it very thirsty on battery, especially nowadays with mp3 players that last much longer without ... a recharge. It has great connectivity to almost and audio/PC with audio ins/outs. The manual line-level record input stage level can be manually set to whatever the user wants - none of this auto-setup nonsense! It comes with an optical lead which may not be enough for some of the less technically minded who would rather use the line-in approach. Whilst recording it even knows when to put track numbers in which was quite a smart feature in its day. This is one of the models that became very popular and came in such a variety of colours, I can imagine most people who have ever used a portable minidisc player have come across this model.
I was never a fan of minidisc until I bought this, and then I didnt accept it with open arms. I spent an age recording my collection onto the discs via my main unit, and I guess that because the player was trendy and compact at the time, it was always going to be popular to some extent. I cant say the minidisc actually took off as other formats have done. If you are looking to buy one of these now I would definately suggest taking a look on the auction sites and you can pick them up for literally a couple of pounds. A bargain in my mind! Archos 504

I was looking for something to watch movies on and listen to music as I went travelling, and this certainly fit the bill.
The device is larger than a typical MP3 player, it comes under the PVP (Personal Video Player) title, but the trade off is worth it for the screen size.
On many occasions I had five or six ... people sat around watching a movie on it, so it's not just a personal device, as it can be enjoyed by a group of people; something that an iPod would struggle to do.
The 160GB HDD is perfect for holding a massive amount of music and movies (something in the region of 200). But another bonus is that it can store photos too, and with the travel adaptor (sold separately) it's possible to plug a digital camera directly into the device and back up photos without the need for a PC.
The down sides:
The internal speaker leaves a lot to be desired, I took a set of portable speakers with me to use when watching movies in a group.
The size, as already mentioned is quite big, but that's the trade off of having such a large screen.
I'd recommend this device for people that do a lot of travelling and don't want to lug around a laptop to keep themselves entertained. Read the complete review |
