... way you can sa ve your recorder is to have it professionally repaired and cleaned, which can cost a lot. My opinion of Sharp Minidiscs based around the old 701 design is: Watch Out. They are great as a budget minidisc recorder, but have a design flaw that will cost you if you don't keep the minidiscs themselves clean. ...more

Premium Review Sharp MD MS702: Great machine but flawed (412 words)

My minidisc is actually a '701, but because the differences between this and a 702 are cosmetic, I put it in this section. I bought this player/recorder in January 1999 fro about £150 and it has been great - lighter than most walkmans and easy to record and collate my minidisc collection. Recording mp3's onto it couldn't be easier either: just connect the stereo out on my pc soundcard to the line in on the recorder. The in-line remote on the 701 is good: it has a backlit lcd screen that makes changing between tracks in the dark easy, and it lights up automatically when you press a button. You can clip it to your shirt and keep the minidisc unit ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Kicks Sony's Ass (399 words)

This is one fine, fine piece of kit. I got it a couple of years ago in a sale for £150 and it’s been faultless. I did a sound engineering course at night school during my A-Levels and this device was a huge help. At the end of each recording session we could mix the results down onto the minidisc so we could have something to compare to our efforts at the next session. But hang on – aren’t minidiscs out of fashion now? Aren’t MP3 players ‘it’. Well yes and no, if you never need more than 74 odd minutes of music then you may be better off with an MP3 player but don’t forget that you generally need a computer to change the ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Sharp MD MS702: Minidiscs are the future!!! (486 words)

I bought a Sharp 701 (it's identical to the 702 except for superficial details) one and a half years ago for £150, when minidiscs were first starting to get popular. I only had a CD player at the time, so I didn't want to go out and buy (expensive) prerecorded MDs, so I really needed a MD recorder. I was so impressed by the ease of recording CDs onto MDs with the 701, you just plug the (provided) cable in, press a couple of buttons and there you go. Editing an MD is easy peasy too, you can delete tracks in a second and if you want to add more music, it automatically does it at the end of the MD without erasing anything. The instructions were incredibly ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Still going strong (165 words)

I actually have the 701 version of this MD but it doesn't seem to be included in this section. Anyway I bought it at duty free, had £50 off because of the sale then another £50 because of tax free so I ended up with a MD for £150. Have to say even though they are pretty expensive pieces of equipment its been one of the best buys I have ever had. I bought it at the end of 98 and to this day its still going as strong as ever in despite it being dropped and once down the stairs. The quality is excellent and its so simple to use. Abit on the heavy side but that can be expected. I am happy to stick with this player as I think its one of the best around. ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Sharp MD MS702: Out Dated Now (114 words)

I bought this MD palyer in Singapore for half the price it is in the UK 12 months ago. When I bought it, it was the flashest one around sadly now it is outdated. It is huge compared to the new Sony ones on the market. I still use it everyday it is great on the train which bumps all over the place as it NEVER skips. The only fault it the time it takes to programme in the track names. CD's should come with that info imbedded and the MD player should should just copy it across when you record it but hey as if a record company is going to do that ...  Read the complete review
