Advantages: Features, Size, Recording quality
Disadvantages: None
When I saw this mini disc player, I just wanted it. I didn't really know what to expect, it was my first Mini Disc. I was an MD virgin. I wanted it to be gentle with me and take me through the complete MD experience, but simply and with sensitivity. The first problem I encountered was where to plug in the analogue input. The digital input was OK, until I read the manual carefully and found out that the Digital and Analogue inputs go in the same hole...how cool is that! (Should I keep the sexual metaphor going?...no) Other sockets are for the microphone and a line out. The buttons on the face are really quite straightforward, they are used for the normal, play, ff and rew facilities and are also used for naming discs, tracks etc, and moving tracks around on the disc. There are few other buttons around the MZ-R55, for hold, record, volume limiting etc. The remote control unit fits into a socket on the front edge. I don't use the remote control, I find all the wires abit of a pain. I also have a suspicion the RC drains the battery quicker because it has a light, which I'm sure you can switch off, but I haven't read the manual that far. If like me you used tape for compilations and saving vinyl then MD in general is brilliant and the R55 makes it all too easy. The device has the 'Synchro record' function which quite simply means that when you're recording digitally it automatically switches itself off and on at the end and the beginning of tracks, which means that you never have to touch the MD when recording. How brilliant is that. Coupled to its amazing good looks, brushed aluminium casing, robustness and facilities its got to be a five star buy. I can't really justify the new slimmer one but I couldn't be happier with this little device, it's transformed making compilation tapes.
