Advantages: Does the job easily and with style

Disadvantages: Lack of cable to connect to HiFi

As I am writing this, I am actually using the Sony MZ-R70, and a very fine little gadget it is too. I am listening to the Buena Vista Social Club's Ibrahim Ferrer, and the sound quality is absolutely perfect. I compared it to the CD and it's almost identical.

I don't know much about audio stuff, I just wanted to get rid of tape as the the only tape players I have in the house are knackered and having got used to CDs, with all of the programming options you have, I just felt that something else was the way to go.

SIZE
It's tiny, little bigger than the disc itself, and about twenty millimetres thick. It's small enough to get lost in a big pocket, but it's quite heavy so you'd always know it was there - a consideration if you lose things as often as me.

SOUND QUALITY
As I said, perfect for my unschooled ears.

EASE OF USE
I am the kind of person who tends to fiddle around with something without reading the instructions - I did this quite happily with my DVD player, and I actually think this is a strength, given that so many people do it. You really do need to sit down with the instruction booklet on this one however, though doing things like erasing tracks and discs are quite straightforward. Some of the buttons and manoeuvres are quite fiddly, but having said that ut's also quite difficult to do something by accident.

REMOTE CONTROL
Situated halfway down the earphone lead, I think this is ideal - biggish plastic buttons, quite easy to use without looking at them after a few uses. I read another review which mentioned the lack of a clip on the remote, and I agree with this; it would be better if you could fix the remote somewhere handy.

HOW IT LOOKS
Don't know that I care an awful lot about this - and the metallic case, while stylish, looks like it could be scratched quite easily if handled by a clumsy incompetent (ahem)

EXTRAS
Decent little bag to
put the player and headphones in. The mains adapter which can also charge up the supplied rechargable battery is a nice touch. The lack of a cable to connect it to a standard hifi to record anything is a glaring omission which really should be addressed

ALL IN ALL
If you can afford one, buy it; it's superb.
