Advantages: Small, Light, Quality
Disadvantages: Moving parts, skips for joggers
This is fantastic, Sony have done it again. The Mini Disk has taken a mixed reception around the world. Here in the United Kingdom it is booming, over the pond, in the US it hasn't gone down as well. Its a toss up in this day and age between CD MiniDisc, or Mp3. MiniDisc is clearly the best I feel, its small compact and durable as a format, the sound qualitly is also fantastic. Mp3 on the other hand has issues about storing, with a mini disk player you can easily change the disk, and buy new disc are resonable prices, you are unable todo this with a portable Mp3 player. The memory sticks and chips for these cost lots and lots. Another great thing, which puts Minidisk players over Mp3 players for person recording is that you can infact record Mp3s on to MiniDisc through your PC. The only thing Mp3 has over MD players is that there is no moving parts, so if you are a regular jogger, there will be no skipping. Mp3 players are also highly overpriced at the moment. The Sony Mini Disc MZR 90 comes with it all, it's the latest in the Sony MD range. With beautiful sculpting you couldnt ask for anything which looks better. With MiniDisc you can program in track names, and disc names, these are then displayed in the remote control, much better than just playing "track 9", you can see that you are playing "09 - Opps I did it again". You can also get 80 minute discs, like CDs! This is a great feature, which CD players just cant have, without the CD's having CDText allready written to them. This is very uncommon, and you need special equipement to be able to read these. Minidisc is by far the way to go in the next coming years. untill the storage devices for Mp3 players increase in size, and decrease in price, MiniDisk is the best option. This the lithium/nickel battery this will last for ages without having to recharge. However when you are recording music it is advised to
be plugged into mains, as it will drain your batter extremely quickly. Recording is simple, plug in and press record. Or if you are blessed with an optical output, you can use that, and have syncronous recording. Amazing!

- 30/05/02 Although MIDIDISC has moving parts there is no skipping as stated in this review as there is Gshock anti jog protection on all new Sony models and at least 40 seconds antishock memory. |
